SUMMARY:The Boy Who Could Fly (1986)
DESCRIPTION:A teenage girl struggling with a major loss moves to a new neighborhood and becomes fascinated by the mysterious boy living next door. He barely communicates with anyone\, but she becomes convinced there’s something extraordinary about him that everyone else has overlooked. What starts as a coming of age drama gradually becomes something stranger\, sweeter\, and much more magical. Next week we’re reviewing an 80s fantasy about grief\, friendship\, believing the impossible\, and a kid who might actually be able to fly. \nCommissioned by: Mark P. • 9/24/26 \n• Year: 1986\n• Budget: About $9 million\n• Box Office: About $7.2 million domestic\n• Awards: Won the Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film\n• Fun Facts: The movie was written and directed by Nick Castle\, who also played Michael Myers in the original Halloween. It stars Lucy Deakins and Jay Underwood\, with early appearances from Fred Savage and Jason Priestley. The movie struggled at the box office but found a much larger audience through VHS and cable\, becoming a nostalgic favorite for kids who grew up in the 80s.

SUMMARY:Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment (1985)
DESCRIPTION:The newest graduates from the world’s least professional police academy finally get their first real assignment and discover that actual police work might be slightly harder than screwing around in training. Sent to help a precinct being terrorized by a ridiculous street gang\, they bring their usual combination of incompetence\, chaos\, and accidental success with them. It’s louder\, dumber\, and even more committed to turning law enforcement into a live action cartoon. Next week we’re reviewing the sequel that took the lunatics out of the academy and unleashed them on an actual city. \nCommissioned by: John S. • 9/24/26 \n• Year: 1985\n• Budget: About $7.5 million\n• Box Office: About $115 million worldwide\n• Awards: No major awards\n• Fun Facts: Most of the original cast returned\, including Steve Guttenberg\, Bubba Smith\, and Michael Winslow. The sequel introduced Bobcat Goldthwait as the completely unhinged gang leader Zed\, one of the franchise’s most memorable characters. Despite poor reviews\, the movie was another major commercial success and helped turn Police Academy into one of the most aggressively sequelized comedy franchises of the 1980s.

SUMMARY:Police Academy 3: Back in Training (1986)
DESCRIPTION:The city’s two police academies are told that one of them is getting shut down\, turning police training into a competition for survival. Naturally\, our favorite collection of barely qualified officers returns to train a new class of recruits who might somehow be even less prepared for law enforcement than they were. Rivalries\, sabotage\, terrible policing\, and an impressive amount of stupidity follow. Next week we’re reviewing the third movie in a franchise that apparently looked at two Police Academy movies and said\, fuck it\, let’s keep going. \nCommissioned by: John S. • 9/24/26 \n• Year: 1986\n• Budget: About $12 million\n• Box Office: About $107 million worldwide\n• Awards: No major awards\n• Fun Facts: Steve Guttenberg returned alongside most of the familiar ensemble\, while Bobcat Goldthwait’s former gang leader Zed somehow becomes a police academy recruit. The movie also brought back several characters from the original film who had been absent from the first sequel. It was directed by Jerry Paris\, who also directed Police Academy 2. Despite another round of terrible reviews\, the movie made more than $100 million worldwide and ensured that Warner Bros. would keep this fucking franchise alive for years.
