SUMMARY:Doc Hollywood (1991)
DESCRIPTION:A young doctor headed for a lucrative new career takes an unexpected detour through a tiny Southern town after an accident leaves him temporarily stranded there. What should be an annoying delay slowly introduces him to a completely different kind of life and a community that has no intention of letting him pass through unnoticed. It’s a fish out of water comedy about ambition\, relationships\, and figuring out whether getting exactly what you wanted actually makes you happy. Next week we’re reviewing a charming early 90s comedy that somehow manages to make small town medicine look pretty damn appealing. \nCommissioned by: Adam R. • 7/27/26 \n• Year: 1991\n• Budget: About $20 million\n• Box Office: About $54.8 million worldwide\n• Awards: No major awards\n• Fun Facts: The film stars Michael J. Fox and was based on the novel What? Dead…Again? by physician Neil B. Shulman. The fictional town was largely filmed in Micanopy\, Florida\, giving the movie its authentic small town look. Woody Harrelson appears in an early film role while he was still best known for Cheers. The movie later drew plenty of comparisons to Pixar’s Cars\, which follows a remarkably similar setup involving an ambitious outsider stranded in a small town who begins reconsidering what matters in life.

SUMMARY:Legends of the Fall (1994)
DESCRIPTION:Three brothers growing up in the Montana wilderness find their lives permanently changed by war\, tragedy\, and their complicated love for the same woman. Over the years\, loyalty gives way to jealousy\, heartbreak\, and enough family trauma to keep everyone miserable for decades. It’s a huge\, sweeping melodrama filled with romance\, violence\, beautiful landscapes\, and people making emotionally catastrophic decisions. Next week we’re reviewing an epic about brothers\, love\, loss\, and what happens when one ridiculously handsome man blows into everybody’s life like a fucking tornado. \nCommissioned by: Adam R. • 7/27/26 \n• Year: 1994\n• Budget: About $30 million\n• Box Office: About $160 million worldwide\n• Awards: Won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography and received 2 additional Oscar nominations\n• Fun Facts: The film stars Brad Pitt\, Anthony Hopkins\, and Aidan Quinn and was adapted from the novella by Jim Harrison. Pitt’s performance became one of the defining roles of his early career and helped complete his transition from rising star to full blown 90s movie star. The film’s sweeping landscapes and period photography earned cinematographer John Toll the Academy Award.

SUMMARY:The Exorcist III (1990)
DESCRIPTION:A detective investigating a string of grisly murders begins uncovering clues that connect the crimes to a case everyone thought had ended years ago. As the evidence grows stranger and the answers become harder to explain\, skepticism gives way to something far more unsettling. Instead of relying on cheap scares\, the tension builds through atmosphere\, mystery\, and pure dread. Next week\, we’re reviewing a psychological horror film that many fans consider one of the strongest sequels in the genre. Commissioned by Omar I. (7/27/26) \n\nYear: 1990\nBudget: About $11 million\nBox Office: About $40 million worldwide\nAwards: Nominated for Best Horror Film at the Saturn Awards\nFun Facts: The film was written and directed by William Peter Blatty\, adapting his own novel Legion. It stars George C. Scott and features a widely acclaimed performance by Brad Dourif that many horror fans consider one of the genre’s finest. Although released as The Exorcist III\, Blatty originally envisioned it as a standalone sequel to his novel\, and the film has grown into a cult favorite thanks to its chilling atmosphere\, unforgettable hospital sequence\, and emphasis on psychological horror over gore.

SUMMARY:Jack's Back (1988)
DESCRIPTION:A young medical student finds himself pulled into a terrifying mystery when a series of brutal murders begins echoing one of history’s most infamous killing sprees. As suspicion falls in every direction\, the line between coincidence and conspiracy becomes increasingly difficult to see. Blending psychological thriller\, horror\, and murder mystery\, the story keeps you questioning what’s really happening until the very end. Next week\, we’re reviewing a forgotten cult thriller that puts a fresh spin on one of history’s greatest unsolved mysteries. Commissioned by Omar I. (7/27/26) \n\nYear: 1988\nBudget: About $6 million\nBox Office: About $4.6 million worldwide\nAwards: No major awards\nFun Facts: The film stars James Spader in a dual role that helped showcase his talent for playing complex and unconventional characters. It was directed by Rowdy Herrington several years before he made Road House. The movie draws inspiration from the legend of Jack the Ripper while telling a completely original story\, and although it was overlooked in theaters\, it has developed a loyal cult following among fans of late 1980s psychological thrillers.

SUMMARY:Patch Adams (1998)
DESCRIPTION:A medical student with an unconventional outlook challenges the rules of a profession that often forgets the people behind the patients. His unorthodox methods inspire some\, frustrate others\, and force everyone around him to rethink what it really means to care for someone. Balancing heartfelt drama with moments of humor\, the film asks whether compassion can be just as important as medicine. Next week\, we’re reviewing an emotional comedy drama about healing\, hope\, and refusing to accept that things have to be done the old way. Commissioned by Shane A. (7/27/26) \n\nYear: 1998\nBudget: About $90 million\nBox Office: About $202 million worldwide\nAwards: Nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor (Robin Williams)\nFun Facts: The film is based on the life of Hunter Doherty “Patch” Adams\, though he was openly critical of how Hollywood portrayed his story. It was directed by Tom Shadyac\, who previously directed Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Nutty Professor. Despite mixed reviews from critics\, audiences embraced the film\, making it one of Robin Williams’ biggest box office hits and a longtime favorite for its message about empathy and human connection.

SUMMARY:Blood Diamond 2006
DESCRIPTION:Against the backdrop of a brutal civil war\, three people are brought together by a rare diamond that could change all of their lives. Their search takes them across a country being torn apart by violence\, greed\, and the international trade that profits from both. It’s part war movie\, part adventure thriller\, and part indictment of what can be hiding behind something as simple as a piece of jewelry. Next week we’re reviewing a movie about survival\, redemption\, and the horrifying human cost of getting a diamond from the ground onto somebody’s finger. \nCommissioned by: Rob H. • 8/8/26 \n• Year: 2006\n• Budget: About $100 million\n• Box Office: About $171 million worldwide\n• Awards: Nominated for 5 Academy Awards\, including Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio and Best Supporting Actor for Djimon Hounsou\n• Fun Facts: The story is fictional but was inspired by the real conflict diamond trade that helped finance wars in parts of Africa during the 1990s. DiCaprio worked extensively on the Rhodesian-influenced accent used by his character and spent time in South Africa preparing for the role. Much of the movie was filmed in South Africa and Mozambique. The film also helped bring the issue of conflict diamonds to a much larger mainstream audience at a time when the international diamond industry was already facing increased scrutiny.

SUMMARY:Daylight (1996)
DESCRIPTION:A catastrophic explosion seals both ends of a heavily traveled tunnel\, trapping a group of survivors beneath a river with fire\, flooding\, and collapsing concrete closing in around them. Their only hope is a man willing to enter the disaster while everyone else is desperately trying to get out. From there it’s pure 90s disaster movie insanity\, with seemingly every possible thing that can go wrong doing exactly that. Next week we’re reviewing a survival thriller about claustrophobia\, questionable engineering\, and the apparently terrible decision to drive through a tunnel. \nCommissioned by: Rob H. • 8/8/26 \n• Year: 1996\n• Budget: About $80 million\n• Box Office: About $159 million worldwide\n• Awards: Academy Award nomination for Best Sound Editing\n• Fun Facts: Sylvester Stallone reportedly received around $17.5 million for the movie\, making him one of Hollywood’s highest paid actors at the time. It was directed by Rob Cohen\, who later directed The Fast and the Furious. Stallone’s son Sage appears in the film as one of the trapped survivors. Although set inside New York’s Holland Tunnel\, much of the enormous tunnel environment was recreated on soundstages at Cinecittà Studios in Rome\, where filmmakers could flood\, burn\, and destroy the sets without actually shutting down Manhattan.

SUMMARY:A Perfect World (1993)
DESCRIPTION:An escaped convict takes a young boy hostage and heads across Texas with law enforcement closing in behind them. But as the miles pile up\, their relationship becomes far more complicated than either of them expected. What begins as a manhunt gradually turns into a surprisingly emotional story about childhood\, fathers\, freedom\, and whether a damaged person can still do something good. Next week we’re reviewing a crime drama that looks like a chase movie but has a hell of a lot more going on underneath it. \nCommissioned by: Rob H. • 8/8/26 \n• Year: 1993\n• Budget: About $30 million\n• Box Office: About $135 million worldwide\n• Awards: No major Academy Award nominations\n• Fun Facts: The film was directed by Clint Eastwood\, who also plays the Texas Ranger leading the pursuit. Kevin Costner took the darker role of the escaped convict while he was near the height of his career as a Hollywood leading man. Much of the movie was filmed around Texas\, including Austin and surrounding communities. Although its American box office was relatively modest\, the movie performed much better internationally and has gradually developed a reputation as one of Eastwood’s more overlooked films of the 1990s.

SUMMARY:Revenge (1990)
DESCRIPTION:A former military pilot heads to Mexico to visit an old friend and quickly makes the spectacularly bad decision to fall for the man’s wife. Unfortunately\, his friend is powerful\, possessive\, and absolutely not the kind of guy you want to betray. What follows turns a forbidden romance into a brutal story of violence\, obsession\, and payback. Next week we’re reviewing a sweaty\, sun baked revenge thriller about what happens when love\, friendship\, and common sense all go completely to shit. \nCommissioned by: Rob H. • 8/8/26 \n• Year: 1990\n• Budget: About $20 million\n• Box Office: About $15.6 million worldwide\n• Awards: No major awards\n• Fun Facts: The film was directed by Tony Scott and stars Kevin Costner\, Anthony Quinn\, and Madeleine Stowe. It was adapted from a novella by Jim Harrison originally published in Esquire. Scott later released a significantly shorter director’s cut that removed roughly 20 minutes and reshaped the movie into the leaner\, darker version he preferred. The film disappointed theatrically but has since gained a following among fans of Scott’s stylish early work.

SUMMARY:Reality Bites (1994)
DESCRIPTION:A group of recent college graduates tries to figure out what adulthood is supposed to look like when nobody has much money\, their careers aren’t going according to plan\, and their relationships are even more confusing. At the center is a young filmmaker caught between two very different men and two very different ideas of what success might mean. It’s cynical\, romantic\, funny\, and practically soaked in early 90s Generation X anxiety. Next week we’re reviewing a movie about friendship\, selling out\, falling in love\, and realizing that adulthood might mostly consist of trying to pay your bills without becoming someone you hate. \nCommissioned by: Sydney K. • 9/13/26 \n• Year: 1994\n• Budget: About $11.5 million\n• Box Office: About $33 million worldwide\n• Awards: No major awards\n• Fun Facts: The movie marked the feature directing debut of Ben Stiller\, who also appears in the film alongside Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke. Screenwriter Helen Childress began writing the screenplay while still in film school. The soundtrack became a major part of the movie’s identity\, with Lisa Loeb’s “Stay (I Missed You)” becoming a number one hit. Although its theatrical performance was modest\, the film became one of the defining pop culture snapshots of Generation X.

SUMMARY:Varsity Blues (1999)
DESCRIPTION:In a small Texas town where high school football is treated like a religion\, a backup quarterback suddenly finds himself carrying the expectations of an entire community. But the closer he gets to the center of the program\, the more he begins questioning the coach\, the pressure\, and just how much everyone is willing to sacrifice to win. It’s part sports movie\, part teen comedy\, and pure late 90s MTV energy. Next week we’re reviewing a movie about football\, fathers\, friendship\, whipped cream bikinis\, and teenagers realizing that maybe their psychotic coach shouldn’t control their entire fucking lives. \nCommissioned by: Heather T. • 9/18/26 \n• Year: 1999\n• Budget: About $16 million\n• Box Office: About $54 million worldwide\n• Awards: No major awards\n• Fun Facts: The film stars James Van Der Beek\, who made the movie while Dawson’s Creek was turning him into one of the biggest young television stars of the era. Jon Voight reportedly spent time around Texas high school football programs while developing his intense portrayal of the coach. The movie’s soundtrack and MTV backed marketing helped make it a defining piece of late 90s teen culture. The line “I don’t want your life” became one of the most remembered quotes of the movie and has followed Van Der Beek ever since.

SUMMARY:The Ringer (2005)
DESCRIPTION:A desperate guy agrees to an incredibly offensive and unbelievably stupid scheme to rig a major athletic competition and solve his financial problems. The plan immediately becomes more complicated when the people he’s trying to fool turn out to be a hell of a lot smarter than he expected. What could have been a complete disaster somehow becomes a surprisingly sweet comedy about friendship\, acceptance\, and realizing you’re the asshole in your own plan. Next week we’re reviewing a movie built around a premise that sounds almost impossible to make today. \nCommissioned by: Heather T. • 9/18/26 \n• Year: 2005\n• Budget: About $20 million\n• Box Office: About $40 million worldwide\n• Awards: No major awards\n• Fun Facts: The film stars Johnny Knoxville and was produced by the Farrelly brothers. The filmmakers worked with the Special Olympics during production\, and several performers with intellectual disabilities played major roles rather than simply appearing in the background. The Special Olympics organization ultimately supported the film after being involved with the project and reviewing the script. Despite the deliberately provocative premise\, much of the movie’s humor ultimately comes from making Knoxville’s character the clueless target of the joke.

SUMMARY:The Boy Who Could Fly (1986)
DESCRIPTION:A teenage girl struggling with a major loss moves to a new neighborhood and becomes fascinated by the mysterious boy living next door. He barely communicates with anyone\, but she becomes convinced there’s something extraordinary about him that everyone else has overlooked. What starts as a coming of age drama gradually becomes something stranger\, sweeter\, and much more magical. Next week we’re reviewing an 80s fantasy about grief\, friendship\, believing the impossible\, and a kid who might actually be able to fly. \nCommissioned by: Mark P. • 9/24/26 \n• Year: 1986\n• Budget: About $9 million\n• Box Office: About $7.2 million domestic\n• Awards: Won the Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film\n• Fun Facts: The movie was written and directed by Nick Castle\, who also played Michael Myers in the original Halloween. It stars Lucy Deakins and Jay Underwood\, with early appearances from Fred Savage and Jason Priestley. The movie struggled at the box office but found a much larger audience through VHS and cable\, becoming a nostalgic favorite for kids who grew up in the 80s.

SUMMARY:Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment (1985)
DESCRIPTION:The newest graduates from the world’s least professional police academy finally get their first real assignment and discover that actual police work might be slightly harder than screwing around in training. Sent to help a precinct being terrorized by a ridiculous street gang\, they bring their usual combination of incompetence\, chaos\, and accidental success with them. It’s louder\, dumber\, and even more committed to turning law enforcement into a live action cartoon. Next week we’re reviewing the sequel that took the lunatics out of the academy and unleashed them on an actual city. \nCommissioned by: John S. • 9/24/26 \n• Year: 1985\n• Budget: About $7.5 million\n• Box Office: About $115 million worldwide\n• Awards: No major awards\n• Fun Facts: Most of the original cast returned\, including Steve Guttenberg\, Bubba Smith\, and Michael Winslow. The sequel introduced Bobcat Goldthwait as the completely unhinged gang leader Zed\, one of the franchise’s most memorable characters. Despite poor reviews\, the movie was another major commercial success and helped turn Police Academy into one of the most aggressively sequelized comedy franchises of the 1980s.

SUMMARY:Police Academy 3: Back in Training (1986)
DESCRIPTION:The city’s two police academies are told that one of them is getting shut down\, turning police training into a competition for survival. Naturally\, our favorite collection of barely qualified officers returns to train a new class of recruits who might somehow be even less prepared for law enforcement than they were. Rivalries\, sabotage\, terrible policing\, and an impressive amount of stupidity follow. Next week we’re reviewing the third movie in a franchise that apparently looked at two Police Academy movies and said\, fuck it\, let’s keep going. \nCommissioned by: John S. • 9/24/26 \n• Year: 1986\n• Budget: About $12 million\n• Box Office: About $107 million worldwide\n• Awards: No major awards\n• Fun Facts: Steve Guttenberg returned alongside most of the familiar ensemble\, while Bobcat Goldthwait’s former gang leader Zed somehow becomes a police academy recruit. The movie also brought back several characters from the original film who had been absent from the first sequel. It was directed by Jerry Paris\, who also directed Police Academy 2. Despite another round of terrible reviews\, the movie made more than $100 million worldwide and ensured that Warner Bros. would keep this fucking franchise alive for years.
