There’s been something bothering me about the “quest for immortality” in West World. In the experiments with daddy Delos, the whole point was for immortality, so that when his body died, he’d have a backup to replace him. This backup is essentially, a clone of his memories, experience, thoughts, cognition – a perfect replica. <\/p>\n

Assuming the process could actually be successful, then from the perspective of the external world, your quest for immortality would be achieved. Daddy Delos dies, yet Daddy 2.0 continues on, the perfect replica. But what is the perspective of the original Daddy Delos’s? He dies, there’s no getting around that fact. Daddy 2.0 wakes up with the full set of memories as the original, so from 2.0’s perspective, James is just continuing on. However, if you are the original, your consciousness won’t jump into the other body, your first-person narrative ceases with your death. <\/p>\n

If they made Daddy Delos 2.0 before the original died, there would be 2 simultaneous copies. But the original would not be seeing through 2.0’s sets of eyes, nothing would seem different to him. When he dies, he is dead, regardless of if there’s a replacement to live on. <\/p>\n

So, it’s not really a quest for immortality from your own perspective. But merely a desire to have a copy of yourself live on after you have died. <\/p>\n
