I think the Man in Black was picked up by QA outside the Forge, taken to the beach, and at some point dies in the future (after what we saw with Charlores becoming Delores again and Bernard Radioheading out into the real world). Most importantly- he never rode down that elevator when he was alive. <\/p>\n

The stinger really starts a few scenes before the credits, when William is Ripley-ing down the elevator. I believe this scene takes place in the far future, after the Machines have taken over the world (or near abouts). Emily-bot is testing William for one of a few different possible reasons- (tin foil hat time) <\/p>\n

1. The robopocalypse is in full swing, the humans are dead and gone, and they are curious about their creators so they decide to revive one they have a copy of. <\/p>\n

2. Or the robot overlords need William for some specific reason. <\/p>\n

3. Or maybe the fate of mankind has come down to a battle of love versus hate, and the love side is trying to prove that even the most hateful person that ever lived could change and NOT shoot his daughter (this explains why we saw the journey with Emily and the flashbacks and her getting killed) so they were running the simulation to try and get an outcome where William saves his daughter. <\/p>\n

Either way, awesome episode! Sizemore’s sacrifice (that speech!) showed the hosts that humans CAN change and will come back in the future sometime. <\/p>\n
