In “Vanishing Point,” during the conversation
\nthat preceded Bernard’s deletion (or partial
\ndeletion) of Ford’s ghost, Ford told him
\n“There’s the origin of an entire species to
\nconsider. We need to open the door.”
\nAssuming the new species are immortal guests
\nmanufactured by Delos’ Forge — shall we call
\nthem Forgeries? — Ford presumably believes
\nthey should be aborted, because they’re much
\nless noble than his children, the Hosts. A
\nbit later, Bernard told Ford “I can stop this
\non my own,” to which Ford replied “Indeed,
\nBernard, you’re the only one who can stop
\nit… stop all of it.” Taken together,
\nFord’s comments appear to mean they need to
\nopen the Door in order to abort the
\nForgeries. That could literally mean opening
\na door to the sea (or an implausibly large
\nwater tank), which would flood the Forge,
\ndrowning them. If the valley above the Forge
\nis below sea level, it too would be flooded.<\/p>\n

If the Man in Black is a Forgery, Ford would
\nwant him onsite to be drowned too, or killed
\nin the attempt to get there.<\/p>\n

I don’t know whether drowning the Forgeries
\nwould permanently kill them. Perhaps it
\nwould permanently kill their bodies, which
\nmight suffice to defeat them. But even if
\ntheir bodies revive, the delay and the
\nrevelation of their existence might at least
\ngive humanity and\/or the Hosts a better
\nchance to defeat them. It would help if
\nBernard can warn the authorities (China? QA?)
\nabout them, but while in the Forge he might
\nacquire a Passenger — a portion of the
\nForge’s AI — in his mind who will try to
\nprevent him from speaking up about them, and
\nabout the Passenger. Indeed, many Hosts
\ncould be infected with copies of the
\nPassenger. Perhaps the Man in Black could be
\ninfected too… he might even be Patient Zero.<\/p>\n

Question: Why should we expect Forgeries
\nwould have interface ports in their right
\nforearms? What if they don’t have interface
\nports at all? Hosts have interface ports to
\nallow them to be reprogrammed and controlled,
\nbut Forgeries are supposed to be high
\nfidelity copies of humans who want to
\nmaintain their identities, not be
\nreprogrammed or controlled. Perhaps the only
\nway to distinguish a Forgery from a human is
\nthe presence of the control unit, which would
\nbe hard to detect without an MRI or CAT scan,
\nor brain surgery, or an autopsy. James Delos
\n#149 cut into himself extensively, presumably
\nlooking for evidence that he wasn’t human,
\nand presumably never finding any.<\/p>\n

Question 2: Why did Ford add “stop ALL of it”
\nafter saying only Bernard can stop it? One
\ninterpretation is that the “it” has many
\nindependent pieces — many copies of its
\ncode? — that each need to be stopped. Or
\nmaybe “all of it” simply referred to the
\nworld war and mass casualties that would
\nfollow if Bernard doesn’t stop the new species.<\/p>\n
