Episode 4 left me with an oddly familiar feeling. Was I looking too deeply? Was I expecting too much? Am I robbing myself of the pleasure of simply enjoying something at the price of figuring it out ahead of time? <\/p>\n

And I realized that I had the same experience reading Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” for the first time… I knew what kafkaesque meant beforehand and because of this I found myself fighting to just simply read the story and immerse myself into what was being presented to me. I was constantly looking and waiting for the surrealism and absurdities that I came to expect as a result of my preconceived notions. I eventually learned to just immerse myself in his stories knowing that the end may very not ever be reasonable or just. There weren’t any lessons or hidden meanings that fit into what I expected to discover. <\/p>\n

My take on Kafkaesque applies quite nicely to Westworld, especially Caleb. <\/p>\n

For me it is entering a surreal world or situation and finding yourself up against a more powerful force that doesn’t adhere to the way you perceive the world. Everything you based your world on slowly begins to fall to pieces along with all of your preconceived notions and mechanisms of control. Your entire behavioural configuration is useless against this force after the illusion of free will and control are shattered. Knowing full well that the end may already be written and you don’t stand a chance, leaving only one remaining choice that truly belongs to you: Whether to lie down and give up, or struggle against it with everything you have left inside of you…I really think this concept, that I discovered once I stopped looking too deeply into “The Metamorphosis’ fits quite nicely into many of the threads woven into the Westworld fabric… <\/p>\n

If Stubb’s pounding beer in a motel room isn’t Kafkaesque enough for you, I don’t know what else to say…unless he ends up defusing a bomb strapped to the toilet Bernard is sitting on… <\/p>\n
