Lee And His Importance To Maeve

Hey Guys,

The most emotional impact from the finale that seems to have been written off as “stupid” or purposeless is Lee’s death and his relationship with Maeve. I have been intrigued by this pairing from the beginning but especially after Maeve surmises Hector was an idealized version of Lee. My take on his sacrifice is this:

He tells Hector he will stall, ” Go, go,” Her believes Maeve can be reunited with her daughter in this Valley and believes Hector to be the man to protect her ( she’ll need you). He has NO IDEA what would have happened and neither does the audience for that matter if he came out with his hands up. They probably would have shuffled him into the doonbuggie and QA would have given chase (look what happened to Maeve last time that happened in Lee’s eyes). He could have attempted to talk his way to stalling and it still could have amounted to a struggle and his death. Hell, as far as I’m concerned his choices that day were always death or a life of aiding the likes of Charlotte Hale who she deemed worthy of keeping all this espionage under wraps ( I.E. Elsie). Maybe he didn’t want to be a passenger again

He felt like a failure in the Mesa, curled up in a ball like a bitch wanting to have done something more for Maeve and then here she comes and pointedly tells both he and Hector that ” you both were late” not so subtlety indicating that she has accepted him even as his actions almost led to her death and losing her child again. She forgave him that and furthermore put him on the same level as Hector as someone she counts on. That’s HUGE! How do you repay that if you’re a hopeless romantic coward? You make the ultimate sacrifice embodying the person who would have taken that stance. ” It’s my fucking speech anyway.” Hector didn’t back down, he died for his beliefs which meant Lee believed it as well. He was honestly thinking ABOVE himself or the end goal. He knew they had gotten away. He watched them and still he CHOSE to become the man he’s always wanted facing what he now considers the oppressors. It’s downright poetic and hearing shit like, well, it could have..blah blah blah is a disservice to the moment when you only view it as a moment instead of an ARC like it actually was.

I’m not saying there shouldn’t have been just a few more scenes to get us to this point but ultimately when compared to William; here was a man who finally saw these hosts as humans and could no longer bring himself to be a part of that machine that held them prisoner because he’d fallen in love with him. Whereas William falls in love with a host , has all the evidence that proves she’s real and her kind are indeed real, and simply chooses never to accept it.
