Hey guys

Michael from England (The North)

Just listened to the deep dive, great in depth analysis, thought the points you made, especially on strategy was spot on.

In general I loved the episode, the darkness was annoying at first but that could be my TV. Once the action moved into Winterfell it seemed a lot clearer. I thought the visuals in this episode were beyond movie level, in fact they were some of the most gorgeous shots ever commited to film. Once of the best was also one of my main problems…..

The charge of the Lord of Light Brigade –

WHY????? Why send your whole Dothraki force into death immediately with no support at all. That’s a massive percentage of your force gone, we all knew as soon as they ran into the dark what was going to happen. How demoralizing it must be to hear the war cries slowly ebb away and the lights go out one by one. I imagine the War Council meeting…”right you guys are going to charge at the undead, don’t worry we will blindly use our trebuchets to thin them out”.

In general the strategy for the battle was pretty awful and it felt like strategy was sacrificed for style.

My other main issue is the lack of threat to A listers. Pretty quickly into the episode it dawned on you that no matter how dire the situation characters like Jon, Dany, Jamie, The Hound, Brienne, Sam, Tyrion, Sansa and Arya were never going to be killed. For me thus ruined one of the most ‘Are they really going to kill them’ moments of the episode with Tyrion and Sansa. Everything about that moment, the shared looks, the holding hands, the amazing music was leading you to think “shiiiiit they are gonna kill them”!!!!! Unfortunately the multiple saves of your A listers prior to this immunized you to this possibility. If they had not shown the main characters in mortal peril every 5 minutes up till that point only to be saved again and again it may have had a deeper impact.

Side note, any of you guys feel that Ayra sneaking round the undead was a homage to the Jurassic Park kitchen scene with the velociraptors?

Keep up the good work guys, love your work.

Agreed. I’d rather have seen characters obscured and lost in the fog of war, rather than continually brought to the brink of death, then rescued. For instance, when Jaime and Brienne disappeared into the wave of wights, I understood they were in mortal danger. Seeing them continue to fight and be wounded, I understood they were in mortal danger. I didn’t need to see each character covered in wights, then saved over and over again.
