Danny Has Dragon Management Issues

Hosts:

Just listened to the insta cast and I have some thoughts:

1) I know you discussed Danny’s poor planning, but how aren’t we more dismayed over the blatant negligence she has displayed in caring for her dragons thus far. She’s allowed Viserion to be taken down via the Night King’s spear. I can almost give her that death as a “learning experience” that they are not immune to threats. She was young and naive.

Next, she allows John to ride Rhaegal, effectively forever ceding authority and control over to John. This was supremely stupid. She knows the bond that exists between rider and dragon-yet she willingly let John bond to Rhaegal.

Rhaegal is then ridden in the B of W and sustains HEAVY damage and, instead of waiting a hot minute to allow him to recharge, we see him depart with massive gaping holes in his wings.

Next, of course, comes Euron’s spears. Instead of flying in a protective formation wherein the dragons are separated from one another, Danny sachets into Dragonstone (a hop skip and a jump from kings landing) gliding atop her navy, banners on display, and shockingly is attacked by the new and improved crossbow that she NARROWLY escaped at Loot Train once already!

Finally, in the admittedly heart-stopping and (very cool) confrontation with Cersei at the edge of King’s Landing, Daenarys decides to bring her ONLY REMAINING DRAGON and let it SIT on the ground while a dozen or so crossbows sit perched on the battlements alongside dozens or a hundred archers. Nevertheless she showed up with a hundred or so unsullied as well as Tyrion and Varys, all of whom had to march there. Why in God’s name would she allow that dragon to get within EYESIGHT of Cersei. Just seems so reckless to me.

I know that dragons are mystical creatures and that there is no one “right” way to care for them. But come on. There are several other instances where she has overtly shown that she has no clue what she is doing with them and it has, time and again, complicated things for her. Just my thoughts. I still like Daenarys as a character- but the whole Mother’s of dragons title should be amended to custodian of dragons in training. At a minimum she should wear an “earning my ears” pin as Disney employees do during training. ??

2) We have heard the line time and again now that Melisandre repeats to Arya…brown eyes, blue eyes, green eyes…etc. I think, collectively, we have all rushed to judgment to assume that the green eyes MUST refer to Cersei. After all, Cersei has been numero uno on Arya’s list and she is seen riding off with the Hound to finish “unfinished business” in king’s landing as recently as this episode.

So, it’s easy to assume that this is her mission. I believe, however, that Arya will kill Daenarys, another character with green eyes.

It’s clear from this and other episodes that the Stark’s simply don’t trust Danny. Arya tells John as much this very episode “she’s not one of us.” With word out now about johns parentage, it’s only a matter of time before Sansa starts plotting. She already has begun to play the game of thrones as you all mentioned by leaking that word to Tyrion. Is that the extent of her plan? Would she rather see Danny wiped out? Varys certainly agrees that the mad kings daughter may not have fallen too far from the proverbial tree…

3) I need to know your thoughts on the Starbucks cup.

Is it a hokey joke that people have overreacted to that we should just embrace?

Or are you pissed by it’s appearance? Should such a wanton joke be hidden in such a fantastically themed and produced show that requires tens of millions of dollars thousands of man hours per episode to produce? Does it weaken it?

Or should we see it as the visual effects guys’ way of saying fuck you audience, you claim you couldn’t see the battle of winterfell, so let’s hide a coffee cup at a dark feast. If you see this shit then you can see the rest of it…

Anyways thanks for everything guys! Hope you know how much I appreciate your collective hard work.

Long time listener,
Mitch from Pitt Law
