I have a theory about Dolores & William that basically centers around the premise that Dolores is not sentient. She is just experiencing a reverie glitch that she cannot distinguish from reality, not unlike the wood chopper.
She’s acting out a loop from 30 years ago in which she was programmed to behave as though she were becoming sentient, and everything we’ve seen so far from William and Delores is part of a scripted narrative.
Delores is a giant trick that William fell for, and his disillusionment upon learning that is what made him become The Man In Black. This would fit with one of the themes : “if you can’t tell the difference, does it matter?”
