Ed Sheeran’s New Song in Westeros

I’m writing this email so I don’t rage quit the Shat podcasts. I generally like the podcasts but you guys made such a huge analytical error that I had to say something.

The Lannister soldiers / Ed “Sheheen”.

That whole scene was about demonstrating Arya’s character. As soon as she walks up, the shot lingers on the weapons. You can tell she’s analyzing how she’ll kill these assholes. Then they offer her meat and wine. She initially declines, loathe to come near breaking guestright. She eventually acquiesces and accepts the meat and wine, the implication is that she decided not to make them crow food. Arya is not a mindless murder ninja.

The Arya we knew before her faceless training is still in there. The one that loved Jon and her family. That was the whole point.

But some people couldn’t get over the fact that Ed Sheeran was singing a “new song.” “Corporate tie ins” they cry. “You’re better than this GoT!”

There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth. This is dumb for two reasons.

  1. Musical guest cameos are common on Game of Thrones, they’re just usually not as visible as this one happened to be.
  2. That song he singsisa new song in Westeros! In the books it was written by a singer about Tyrion and Shae. Some of us book people have been waiting years for “Hands of Gold.”

Ok, rant over. I’ll keep listening, but you guys are on double secret probation now. Sorry for any typos, I’m writing this in my 100&#176 car on my phone.

Keep doing what you do.

Thanks,
Drew
