Forgive Me Shatsters

Forgive me Shatsters, for I have sinned. It has been four weeks since my last confessional. I have many sins to which I must confess.

Number 1: I gave up on the show after the fourth episode.
Number 2: I have continued to listen to your deep dive and your confessional even though I do not watch the show anymore. Number 3: I swear to the old gods and the new that I am not saying this to kiss your respective butts, but I honestly find your podcast to be more entertaining and more interesting than the show AND the book.

So, now that I have got that off my chest, I would like to comment on some of the interesting ideas that you have discussed in your podcast. I have really enjoyed the discussions you have had about what it means to worship. We worship the new gods, like technology and media, simply by paying attention to them and spending time on them. We don’t consider them higher powers. We don’t bow at their alters. We don’t slaughter lambs in their honor. But, we do sacrifice our time and money to them, and from that, the new gods derive their strength. So, what does that say about organized religion and traditional worship? It’s just about time and money. You go to church, you put money in the collection plate, and that is worship. It doesn’t matter if it’s meaningless. It doesn’t matter if you truly believe. It doesn’t matter if, after church, you beat your kids and cheat on your wife. Looking at it this way, I really think the show/book is a condemnation of organized religion. I do have to admit that it is pretty cool that a book in which gods are real and walk the earth is actually belittling religion and belief while simultaneously portraying them as real.

To wrap up, I have, in fact, read the book, and I watched the first four episodes of the show, but it was your podcast that brought me to these thoughts. Would love to hear what you think of these musings from a humble sinner.

AMEN!
