Lord of Light or Trick of Night King

Hello Rog, Big D and Gene,

a little speculation based on theories out on the internet.

There is a theory that the visions in the flames that the followers of R’hllor see actually come from greenseers rather than an actual Lord of Light. This is an intriguing theory as it allows multiple actors to influence through providing visions whether that be the Children of the Forest, Bloodraven, Bran or the Night King himself. Its clear through the interactions between Bran and the Night King that both can operate on the same sphere.

In this episode, Beric Dondarrion chats with Jon Snow about the Lord of Light. Jon comments that he doesn’t know what these Gods want and Beric replies that “its not our purpose to understand”. Could this lack of understanding of will be because different greenseers want different outcomes?

If the vision in the flames the Hound saw were provided by the Night King then this episode can be seen as a trap by the Night King to capture a dragon. He lured them to an area where his army of wights could contain our heroes and wait for the rescue by dragons. After all, it was rather convenient that they had ice spears for this very purpose with them.

If the Ice Dragon is used to breach the wall in some way in the next episode then we have an explanation for why the army of wights have been wandering around since season one. They needed the key to be given to them.

It isn’t a universal explanation but I feel it has logic to it. The Night King is a clever actor here whereas Tormund observes to Jon that they aren’t very smart to embark on this quest to capture a wight.

I also feel the actor who played the captured wight deserves props for really committing to the role. They made me laugh on several occasions with their constant twitching.

Keep up the good work guys. -John L

p.s. (um actually) re the conversation about ‘thousands’, do we know if this world uses base 10 / decimal system? If it were a base 5 system then a thousand in base 5 would be 125 in base 10. This would explain the apparent exaggeration in the show. I suspect this is a retrofit explanation though.
