Second Half of The Episode Was Boring

Hey, Shat crew:

This show has officially been ruined. I thought they still had a chance to stick the landing, but after this episode all hope has been lost.

Let’s start with the entertainment value. The episode started off strong with the execution of Varys, Tyrion and Jaime’s emotional scene, and the initial attack on King’s Landing. Then the bells rung and everything turned to shit. I was severely bored by shot after shot of random civilians running for their lives. I was just not emotionally invested. Everything might as well been a blur. Sandor and Arya’s goodbye scene was nice reprieve from the mirage of sameness and Cleganebowl had some entertainment moments, but a lot of the second half of the episode was boring.

Then we go to the story itself and the character arcs. Daenerys turning into a mad queen was not earned. This was a complete violation of her character. Daeny never attacked innocent civilians on her campaigns. Her heavy-handed justice was only dealt to those that sought to steal her dragons, slavers who killed children, Khals that wanted her killed, or opposing military leaders. Again, this turn was not earned.

Euron vs Jaime was the fight I never knew I didn’t want. Like, seriously, how ridiculous was that whole thing? And even though I caught the feels by the last scene between Tyrion and Jaime, Tyrion plotting the escape of his siblings was wild. So this dude is gonna straight up snitch on his advisor buddy and then commit treason himself the next day? Wow.

Jaime being a piece of sh*t and going back to Cersei is actually not that distressing to me. What is distressing is how badly the writers treated Brienne. Instead of leaving their relationship at the platonic stage they had to ruin it by getting romantic, only to have Jaime leave after a couple of days like the douche he is. Many had him going back to Cersei to end her life, but the only thing they saw end was the chance to see a satisfying character arc.

I’m really bummed after this episode. And it’s not like I couldn’t have accepted Daeny going a bit berserk. I would have been totally cool with her deciding to burn the Red Keep after hearing the bells. To not give Cersei the mercy she didn’t afford Missandei would have been completely in-line with her way of thinking as established by the show, and people like Tyrion would still have a legitimate beef against her for deciding to attack an enemy who had surrendered.

I really hope GRRM finishes the books. He is the only winner out of this mess.

Sincerely,

-Armando from Puerto Rico
