Small Council Thoughts

Hi guys,

Relatively new to the podcast but loving hearing your thoughts on the latest episodes of GOT.

Found it interesting listening to your take on the Tyrion/Daenerys relationship this week.

My feeling is that Tyrion has and always will search for the diplomatic option that is likely to involve less violence. In a way this represents the polar opposite to Daenerys who has more often than not opted for the violent approach. I think what we have seen over the course of their relationship is that it is not as simple as either of these approaches. Tyrion’s attempted diplomacy has resulted in some heavy losses for Daenerys and her allies, whereas Daenerys’ violent streaks have lost her the trust and faith of many of her people and her advisors. I think the show is showing us that you cannot rule without either diplomacy or force.

Ultimately I think Varys (and reluctantly Tyrion himself) have realised that Daenerys’ worst impulses cannot be controlled and that Jon represents the realms best option when it comes to these qualities. Tyrion wants to believe that the good in Daenerys will out, but deep down he knows she is becoming more and more like her father, particularly after what just happened to Rhaegal and Missandei.

I do think however that Daenerys truly does want to be a kind ruler, I think part of the tragedy of GOT is watching the slow but steady progression of Daenerys from an idealistic, naive girl who seeks power in order to make the world a better place, into a true Targaryen that wants power for power sake and is willing to do anything to get it. A truly excellently written character with such subtle development and progression.

For what it’s worth, my prediction for Tyrion’s story is this… Daenerys and her forces will by some eventuality defeat Cersei, this will involve Daenerys using Drogon to devastating effect. Varys will conspire to promote Jon to the throne or attempt to engineer an assassination on Daenerys. This will be unsuccessful. Daenerys will gather Varys, and any others who have betrayed her and any prisoners of the war (Lannister’s, Golden company etc) in the throne room and attempt to execute them by burning them alive, ie “Burn them all”. For Tyrion this will be the final straw and he will kill Daenerys to save Kings Landing and his friend Varys, thus becoming the Queen Slayer as his brother is the King Slayer.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this theory!

Keep up the good work,

All the best

Tyrion definitely has a huge role to play in this final season, but I don’t know if he has the stomach for bloodshed anymore. The only times he’s been driven to kill were in combat and when his father destroyed the one thing he loved.
