Teddy’s Death
I’ve been wondering to myself why Teddy’s death just didn’t have the ‘wow’ factor it should’ve had for me. Even with Evan Rachel Wood’s performance, it was just kind of a ‘meh’ moment.
I think I’ve figured it out.
They never really have the character the importance to warrant that kind of feeling of loss. In Season 1, Teddy was always second fiddle to young William. He was ‘Dudley Do-Right’ to Dolores’ ‘Nell’. Meanwhile, William stole the girl (not to mention the screen time).
Then in this season, Teddy was essentially just a crowbar they gave us so we could pry inside Dolores’ head. At first, he was a stake in the ground. We watched Dolores descend into host madness by gauging her distance from Teddy. Then, once she had Teddy altered, he wasn’t a reliable yardstick any longer. He became disposable.
So when he decided to dispose of himself, it wasn’t a surprise. He was just played out.
Anyway, that’s my thought for this week. Really looking forward to the season ender. Keep up the great work!
Thanks!

When you think about it, nearly every major Westworld character has a counterpart who enhances his/her character but isn’t terribly interesting on his/her own: Maeve’s daughter, Kohana, Sakura. As much as I would have liked Teddy to have his own tale, I’m like you: I just wasn’t shocked by his death.
