They Ruined Daenerys

HI and thank you for the wonderful podcast. It really has kept me totally sane during this season 8.

And thank you for reading this email. I’m sorry if it”s boring or a waste of your time, but I do really appreciate your time and all the effort you”ve put into your work.

And I’m sorry I’m so scatterbrained, there” s just too much to say and I’m short on time.

Just to share an opinion of those of us who feakin hated it, here”s why I hated it. This is just the short version. I could go on and on, but really no one has time for my complaining.

(please forgive any misspelling?)

Please understand that this is in the context of season 8 as whole because my anger for episode 6 really began to build earlier in the season. Really episode 5 did me in.

The basics are this: This season treated Deany like trash even though she was one of the major protagonists….the one with the freaking awesome dragons.

All of that culminating with episode 5, I was literally done after episode 5. I could barely watch episode 6 because it felt so foreign to me and out of place.

I”m pissed the Stark”s got everything they wanted and Deany didn’t even get treated fairly by Jon, Tyrion, or anyone. Even her death scene was weak.

It”s like everyone in this show has so much to be thankful to Deany for…..but they”ve forgotten all of that in favor of just being scared of her and now wanting her dead.

I just can’t even fathom it.

They are just so ungrateful. Anything after episode 3 has absolutely infuriated me because the characters actions were so unrealistic and not believable.

As a viewer, I felt tricked and betrayed. It”s like Deany was one person, and now someone as bad as Hitler. Like WTF?

It made me so angry and hurt that I couldn’t really watch episode 6. I sat there and looked at the screen, but my mind was not really taking in what was happening. I mean they full on gave her dragon wings….made her Lucifer basically. That killed me. What that shot meant hurt me so much.

I no longer cared about ANY of the characters I had previously loved: Jon, Sansa, Arya, Tyrion….I just blanked out and didn’t even watch the Tyrion scenes that everyone is raving about.

Cersi fucking dying that way pisses me off. She dies in the arms of Jamie? Are you f”ing kidding me. That sucked. Then Tyrion goes and finds them. She disserved worse than Deany but ended up with a better death because people still cared for Cersi…even though she blew up the damn Vatican (Sept) and killed countless individuals…and I’m sure some kids died considering the fire burst down the alleyways and streets.

No one cared for Deany in the end…fuck all of them. If Jon cared, it just wasn’t believable due to his actions in previous episodes.

I felt as if my time and love for this series had been taken advantage of, like I had been lied to.

Even though this is just a TV show, it felt so personal and wrong.

I know that sounds crazy, but that is how it felt.

I never thought that Jon and Deany would end up together, but I thought and hoped there would be a creative way to end this without turning Deany into a monster.

That”s what they did to my hero of 10 years, they turned her into a monster in 3 episodes.

That”s unforgiveable. I don’t have to forgive these asshats because I don’t know them, will never meet them, and my disgust of this ending will fade quickly because it”s just a TV show. It”s not like what they did was personal even though it feels so personal.

I will never accept that ending. I cannot accept that ending. This series ends for me at the season 6 finale.

Deanerys: I could go into all the feminist crap, but just I don’t have the energy anymore.

I have loved her the most of any of the characters. I guess every girl wants to have power we never had as a child and power we seriously don’t have as women sometimes. This character really was strong yet empathetic and just easy to fall in love with. I also loved the magic of the dragons….it really felt like the show was setting us up for something important. Here were these dragons that spit fire that can really give the army of the dead their due. Sadly the show didn’t use them that way, at least I would”ve harnessed them differently.

When I watch the old Deany scenes, outside Astopor, when she burns the Khals, when she comes out of Drogo”s pyre with dragons…I get goose bumbs still. It was soooo epic. I never felt that way about Jon, even though I really liked him as a character. It felt like she mattered, was something important, something to hope for.

But when season 8 hit, it was just like everything around Deany was stupid. The Starks hated her for no apparent reason. It”s ok to be skeptical of people, but you don’t have to abruptly show it in the way the show did. It came across as catty and nothing more. Sansa could”ve easily been nice to Daeny”s face while expressing to Arya what her concerns were. But we didn’t get any of that.

Fast forward to episode 5, and when the Lannister”s surrendered and Deany made her choice to go evil, I thought she was going for the red keep and I was like YESS, and then…..oh shit. There”s no way she”s coming back from that.

At this point, it was like a slap in my face, punch in my gut, out of the blue, who the hell am I watching. That”s not Deany anymore.

it’s like everyone, including the writer’s, forgot who Deany is and what she has done.

Nevermind that her armies and dragons saved your asses. She could”ve peaced out and went back to Mereen. She could”ve let you all die and took the Army of the dead at the Neck where they would be trapped.

Nevermind that she fought along side them.

Nevermind all her sacrifices.

Nevermind she was an empathetic person when she or her dragons do something wrong.

And episode 6 solidified that. I could barely sit through that episode. I was so pissed. Top that off with giving Deany the shortest, worst death scene of anyone. Even Y”grette got a better death scene. Everyone got a better death scene. And once Drogon flew off, it was like there was no mention of her again. Jon should”ve been killed immediately by any unsullied or drogon.

Drogon torching the throne was beyond cheesy. HE should”ve torched Jon and the thrown could”ve been melted as incident to Jon”s very necessary death.

I”m pissed off the Starks turned into shits this season, and I loved the Starks up until this season.

Season 8 Sansa, Arya and Jon were just stupid, boring and ridiculous.

I felt like all the damn issues could have easily been solved with some basic adult conversations.

Sansa: If she really wants to play the game, why would she continually be a bitch to Deany. Like she should have been nice enough to her face while expressing concerns to either to Arya or Jon. That”s just really bad politicking. If Deany wins, all Sansa could do at that point is hope her relationship with Jon kept her from getting punished by Deany. We didn’t get any of what we needed so Sansa comes across as an ungrateful jerk after the Long night battle.

In Episode 6, I couldn’t” even look at her. Oh great, the north is going to be independent? WHY? You”ve lost a lot of men? Yeah so did the Dothraki and Unsullied.

Losing a lot of men is not a reason to be independent and that stupid north kingdom will be heavily reliant on the south for food when the next winter comes.

Not to mentions that the south could some day pick a battle with her and although the north is large, it”s not heavily populated. This of course assumes Bran doesn’t live for 1000 years and some other person becomes King. Further, the Iron Islands and Dorne should”ve also asked for independence.

Arya: her dialogue has sucked. She doesn’t like Deany in season 8 for “reasons” we don’t see. Also shouldn’t she be impressed with Deany, I mean, Arya loved the old stories of Aegon”s sisters conquering Westeros. Shouldn’t she be even a little interested in Deany?

Her pale mare scene ended up being worthless. I was annoyed in Ep 5 when we were stuck following her again…like um, we did that in episode 3….boring. and since the pale mare scene ended up just being a “pretty shot,” I would”ve given that up for some good dialogue.

Episode 6: Why was she at the kings” moot? She”s never cared about anything like that, but now she”s there with a vote threatening people? So stupid.

Bran on the thone: The only way this works is if he orchestrated the whole thing. Which would”ve been super awesome if they”d even given us an evil grin. Like no one would be able to beat him in this game, but it falls flat because he”s been so flat as a character. It would”ve been so great if we could”ve worried about this happening. Heck I would”ve even liked it if he was somehow the NK. Anything would be better than this boring ass Bran on the throne. Anything to develop that more would”ve been amazing. I feel like we followed him and Meera through the woods for nothing. He”s not that special….just an old encyclopedia. That little shit who wouldn’t stop climbing the castle walls, after he promised his mother he wouldn’t do it…then got pushed off the wall and started an f”ing war. And he better leave f”ing Drogon alone.

Jon: What a boring weeny. I”ve been re-watching the entire series the last 2 weeks. Jon was a bad ass in earlier seasons, BOB was amazing (despite Jon falling into the trap). Jon just beating the crap out of Ramsey, he was brave, bold and got shit done. That Jon was great. This Jon….um just deal with the “Deany is your aunt issue.” Sit down and figure out what the plan is. DO we tell the family now who I am or do we wait until after the war and figure it out? Just address it. Jon is so silent, with few lines, we are left wondering what the f he is thinking.

Further, is he really that stupid? I mean Deany”s been through hell and back and he is all non-affectionate, not consoling. Like can’t you say something like “we”re going to make them pay. Cersi is going to burn.” Anything like that? But no…he”s just silent. It”s soooo weird and awkward. Just not believable at all.

Then he kills her in this episode. Just…..I”m done. I knew it was going to happen but I was still hoping against hope the leaks were fake.

Then that shit lives and gets to go to the Wall? WHAT, you basically give him an eternal adventure in Colorado. Just for fucks sake. Just shit on the Deany fans some more why don’t you.

Bron: Bron is the master of COIN? Are you f”ing shitting me. He”s a crook!! OMG please! Not to mention he probably can’t even read…how”s he going to manage finances?

________________________________________________________

Tyrion: no comment….I blanked out when he was talking because I was too pissed about Cersi. I”ll have to re-watch it when I”ve got enough alcohol to get me through that shit show. Tyrion’s stupidity in ever having faith in Cersi is beyond agonizing. Just stop making him so dumb. The bad battle strategies have been awful. With 3 dragons she could’ve melted that red keep in 30 minutes….done….now let’s go fuck this NK up! ARRRRR just so incompetent.

In summary:

If you were a die hard Stark fan, this show is for you. If you like the dragon lady…piss off.

I think it”s amazing that this show, in just a few short episodes, has made me never want to watch season 7 or 8 again.

Has made me hate the Stark”s in the last few episodes when I should be happy they survived and are moving on.

Has made me not care about Tyrion even though I previously really liked watching him on screen.

They have decimated this series for me.

When I re-watch earlier seasons….it”s like oh the “good ol days.”

They have turned my hero into a monster of epic proportions when it feels so unearned. Just WOW.

And it feels like it was all for nothing, the wheel wasn’t broken. The poor are still poor and starving…but I’m also not sure I ever understood what the “wheel” was to begin with.

And why is it that there can only be one hero at the end? Isn’t this series supposed to be about how it isn’t the normal fantasy hero trope? But for some fucking reason, GRRM has to kill of Deany. Really? He couldn’t think of some reason she need to belong elsewhere? GAWD! yeah we have Yara I guess, but you killed the Dragon lady. Come on!

It”s like the only hero that can win is a hero like Jon. I’m female….I can’t identify with him.

That leaves Sansa…she was an idiot child….who still is an ass….who”s spoiled and got what she wanted with really very little effort on her part. Is this supposed to be the only way women can lead? Literally everyone else had to save her: Littlefinger, Theon, Jon. She never saved herself…she only survived. Not a great character in my opinion. She certainly can manage a house and manage feeding her people, and that”s a good leader. But in this type of fantasy series, we are looking for something more.

Arya…a psychopath…seriously a psychopath. I’m not even going to acknowledge her as a hero. She killed the NK and that”s great. But she”s no hero character…her interest comes first over everyone else”s, so she isn’t a hero.

They had a chance to do something epic with Deany and they didn’t.

Maybe this is GRRM”s plan for Deany, I’m sure it is….but what a letdown for women everywhere who hoped for something great in this series.

I do remember that in LOTR it was a woman who killed the big bad in the end, but the real heros were always Frodo and Aragorn.

Thank you again, I appreciate all that you do for the fandom out there.

Respectfully,

Jana
