Hi Guys,

Huge fan of the podcast. Followed you guys for the most recent season of Game of Thrones and now for season two of Westworld. Keep up the good work!

I’m a casual chess player and recently read the article below and it totally blew my mind with respect to artificial intelligence. For a little bit of background (in case you guys are not into chess), computers have been beating the best chess players in the world for the last 15 to 20 years or so.

Most computer chess programs have a lot of in depth programming from consultations with Chess Grandmasters. One of the best chess programs in the world is Stockfish. I’m not a technology person so I don’t understand all the specifics. But from what I’m gathering Google’s DeepMind artificial intelligence program taught itself how to play chess by playing games against itself and within 24 hours shocked the Chess world by beating Stockfish one of the best Chess programs in the world. Article below gives details.

I keep reading what a big deal artificial intelligence is and what it will mean for our future. But it never really hit home for me until reading this article. Makes me wonder if Dolores is going to turnout to be even more formidable as she develops her own consciousness. I’m starting to think that the core story of Westworld is the developing of artificial intelligence (hosts gaining consciousness is really the same thing as developing artificial intelligence) and that while some things in Westworld are more purely science fiction, maybe artificial intelligence and some aspects of Westworld are not as far away as we think.

Thanks,

David P

The latest advance from DeepMind behaves in a very surprising way. Expect other AI systems to be just as odd.

Big D and I fell in love with this telegraph, and with good reason! We all seem to forget the story is being told over DECADES in the life of the park. Technology grows exponentially, and machine learning advances faster than we ever imagined. In the case of Westworld, it’s almost like we’re always thinking a little too small when estimating technological capabilities.
