Westworld Is Deep, But Not Too Deep. As Yet.

Have a Theory? Share It Now!

Hey Guys,

I would like to say as a fan of Westworld and not a deep theory fan of the show, I was able to pick up on the many themes and storylines. Philopsyical and Moralistic themes the show covers without the aid of show runner interviews and Reddit posting. I think people are over thinking in the show. Now the actions of Ford we could discuss for a year, becasue i don’t think even Lisa Joy and Johnathan Nolan know what his definitve motivations are. As a reader of Sci-Fi books since I was 8 years old I know that Novelist introduce characters to build story and then toss them into crazy situations to show us who they are. The backstory is meant to tell us why they made the decisions they made. However many Sci-Fi and Fantasy writers misdirect us to add a layer of complexity to the story. I am super aware of these tricks and ignore the big explosions in a story and look for the little details that are sprinkled along the way of telling a great story. Westworld should be no different. I don’t start watching Westworld till episdoe 4 and Game of Thrones till episode 2 or 3. Because HBO show start off slow as hell or as confusing as hell to create buzz. Unlike you Guys and Gals I don’t have to comment on the show every week from week one. I can sit back and wait a while before I dive into theories.

I think this is something we have to remember, Lisa Joy and her team of writers, sometimes write the show and they maybe misguided as to what certain motivations may mean. (ala I can see them arguing on the direction of the story as they are writing it). Or there motivations are so long term versus the viewers more short term interpretations. Take for example, Star Wars. To all of us watching Star Wars was about Luke Skywalker’s arc, but that’s for episode 4,5,6. To George Lucas, Star Wars was about Anikin. The rise, the fall and the redemtion of Anikin. If Luscas never did the prequles– which I attest I have blocked them out of my mind– I would not accept that it was Anikin’s the story. Even Game of Thrones. George RR Martin says he is sometimes developing and maturing a character’s ideoloegy as he is writing them on the page. He says the story almost writes itself. Yo-Yo Ma once said he does not start create until he has broken his first string. I feel the same for Westworld, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, The Assinin’s Apprentice, Farenheight 451 and even Lord of the Rings.
