The Grifters (1990)

The Grifters Quote: “One question. Do you want to stick to that story, or do you want to keep your teeth?” – Bobo Justus

“Tequila Sunrise” commissioner Rachel C. returns with another ’90s movie full of sexy people doing confusing things. This week, it’s “The Grifters,” a 1990 neo-noir thriller that proves even John Cusack, Anjelica Huston, and Annette Bening have their off days.

This movie about con people and the con people who love them led to such classy topics as discount grandmas, boob fingerprints, nostalgia trolls, and the kinds of sexual favors landlords can reasonably expect from tenants attempting to seduce them.

“The Grifters,” nominated for multiple Academy Awards, also brought us the most unlikely death in Shat history and possible the worst heist since “Safe Men,” proving critics love anything that hearkens back to old timey movies.”

Plot Summary: “The Grifters” Hard-as-nails Lily Dillon (Anjelica Huston) works as a swindler for dangerous bookie Bobo (Pat Hingle), probably the only man she fears. Arriving in Los Angeles on “business,” Lily looks up her son, Roy (John Cusack), a small-time con artist content with paltry sleight-of-hand cheats. Roy’s girlfriend, Myra (Annette Bening), looks like an All-American type but is a grifter looking to pull off another big-time con. The convergence of the three hustlers inevitably means trouble for all of them.

Love your podcasts and thank you, but when is Ash (adored her Westworld theories) going to stop measuring people’s worth by their attractiveness, and instead by the content of their character. It’s sexist, ignorant, and simly getting boring now with its frequency.
