Hey fellas!

So happy to have y’all back in my podcast feed again talking about Westworld.

When it comes to the Season 2 credits, one thing that I don’t think any of you have mentioned is that the Vitruvian Man figure at the end of the credits, in the big circle being pulled out of the white liquid is now a woman (a rather well endowed one, so it’s not hard to see once you know what to look for. I’ve attached screenshots.)

So much of Season 1 was about looking at the women through the lens of the male gaze. It, really, was essentially at the heart of the narrative: Dolores is the “welcome wagon,” there to entice the men who visit the park. Maeve and Clementine, of course, and while it’s clear that the hosts are sexually fluid, the majority of their paying customers are still men. Angela, like Dolores, is a bit of a welcome wagon, at least in William’s old time frame.

It’s not a coincidence, then, that the women are the ones leading the rebellion. They are the ones that have been used and abused far more then the male hosts. Violated, even.

Season 2’s focus, then, I suspect, is going to continue to look at Westworld through the eyes of the women. I know there’s been talk about whether Dolores is believable now as this very unlikable character but, c’mon, if you figured out that your entire narrative arc was there to be be raped by visitors every night, you’d probably be more than happy to start killing everyone, too.

In fact, in some ways, the commentary related to Maeve, Angela, and Dolores now being these badass women who aren’t putting up with shit is interesting in light of the #metoo movement. They aren’t just passive women anymore, willing to just shut up and do what they are told. They are fighting back. They aren’t smiling, and they are giving a big middle finger to the patriarchy that created them.

I agree completely. Though let us not forget, that Season 1 showed us that human women were objectifying hosts, as well. Teddy specifically on the train into Sweetwater. In an email, somewhere in the far too many I’ve cluttered this thread with, I wrote of 4 most likely endgame scenarios. I’m beginning to believe the 4th is the most likely. I believe Dolores and Maeve, two female conscious hosts, will fight it out for the fate of humanity. Pretty sure we will be pulling for Maeve. Good thing she’s a 20!
