Wight At Castle Black

Hey Guys,
I am a little torn about the theory of Wights not being able to pass the wall because of a certain magic that protects it. If this were true, how could the Wight attack Lord Commander Mormont and Jon Snow when they were inside Castle Black(south of the wall) back in season 1?

It is thought that the Wights can’t pass the wall on their own accord. Those Wights were brought through the wall by Night’s Watchman. So the thought by many is that if they are brought through by the living then they can be brought back once on the other side.
