Arya’s Real Reason For Gendry Sex

Hey guys!

First of all, I absolutely love what you do. I’m so glad that there’s an outlet to discuss the nerdy- ness and cinematic wonder that is Game of Thrones. I honestly can’t get enough of this show, and I’m so glad there are others like me who love unpacking every detail. It truly is a testament of great filmmaking.

As for episode two, again I think some will complain about the pacing. It may be an opinion that not enough happened and it was a slow segway to the epic battle of Winterfell. However, I personally feel that a lot of ground was covered in this episode. Brienne finally became a knight, Danerys knows the truth about Jon, and the “shipping” moment between Gendry and Arya finally happened.

As for me, I’ve never been a fan of Arya pairing up with anyone. The majority of her storyline has been centered around her narrative of becoming a “faceless man. Separating herself from basic human emotion was a sacrifice she made to become the assassin she is now. Or, as the Hound put it, “a cold bitch.”

I thought her scene with Gendry was a bit abrupt and it honestly felt like fan fiction. Her line “I want to know what it’s like” just didn’t sit well with me. It all felt very out of character. I was very disappointed, but as the show came to and end I reached a different conclusion.

No, there is no denying Arya and Gendry have great banter and there is chemistry there. But Arya really seemed to up the ante when Gendry finally let it slip that he is Robert Baratheon’s true heir. Arya, who still doesn’t know that Jon is actually a Targaryen, probably still sees this information as a threat.

Her last scene focuses on her face as she lies awake on the opposite side of the bed from a sleeping Gendry. In my opinion, this illustrates that there is no true intimacy there. It was just an act in the heat of the moment but may allude to something deeper. While some may interpret her sleeplessness as nerves before the final battle, I think it’s something else. Maybe she didn’t break character after all, but has rendered Gendry unsuspecting and trusting if she has to protect any future claim to the throne on Jon’s behalf. That would seem more in tune with the Arya of season 7 who sneakily teamed up with Sansa to kill Littlefinger. Maybe that’s just me, but I’m fully anticipating some serious betrayal for the series finale. And this moment in particular seemed oddly reminiscent of the current Cersi/Euron dynamic where sleeping with someone is a total power move.

Anyway, I just wanted to throw that out there. I often feel that I’m the only one who doesn’t want the Arya/Gendry storyline, so I figured I’d stir the pot a bit. I look forward to any supporting theories or even being debunked entirely.

Keep up the great work!

Cheers,

Britt
