Do Not Blame George!!

Hi guys!

I am a relatively new listener as just I binged – and then read – Game of Thrones recently. As I was catching up with season 7, I listened to your corresponding episodes. I love the podcast, your takes are almost inherent to my GoT-experience, naturally, I don’t agree with all of them. But in this Small Council episode, I’ve heard something that I can’t let stand. Big D talked about George R. R. Martin promising to finish the source material in due time for the show to be able to adapt it. I do not debate this part, what I have a huge problem with is blaming George FOR the state of the weak season we are seeing. George might not have been able to finish the books, which led Dave and Dan into the uncharted territory of creating television preceding its source material, but the creators went out of their way to further sabotage the ending seasons’ slim chances of being well written by insisting on their obsession of a “””73-hours movie””” that they envisioned in 2009 or so because of reasons. HBO offered more time, money and episodes for them multiple times, one executive even calling their decision horrifying. George himself stated before that instead of the 10-episode seasons there should be 13, and that they could have easily gone up to 13 seasons even with the sheer amount of the material (I linked my source below). Many people – including myself – do not criticize the turn of events in and of themselves, but the poor and sometimes non-existent exploration of the journeys, decisions, themes. The major plot points are probably going to be the same in the Song of Ice and Fire eventually, but without the now GoT-trademark jetpacking, valley girl dialogues and seemingly nonsensical decisions made by characters. I would be more than happy seeing Dany turn mad – if it had been gradually built up. I would love to see the painstakingly beautiful, cheesy and tragic love story between Dany and Jon, Jamie’s wavering loyalties, Arya going badass than softening up again if the base for these would have been laid. George’s stories make sense: Dave and Dan did not leave enough screentime for themselves to utilize this core feature of the Song of Ice and Fire. I have no idea why. Every time I see them talking about the episodes, dropping gems like “Dany kind of forgot about the Iron Fleet” I just want to punch their faces. And also thank them for creating this insanely good show. With George, my feelings aren’t ambivalent. Do not blame the mastermind behind this world that we spend so much time in for the sass of two otherwise competent dudes. Let’s just feel sorry for ourselves in peace without attacking George! As a book reader, I would love to see the remaining two popping up, but George R. R. Martin is not your bitch.

I did not record this. John Anealio did and you can read/listen to more at his blog: http://scifisongs.blogspot…

Thank you guys so much for your work, I can’t wait to take the finale apart listening to Shat on TV. Sorry, my non-native English speaker ass for the potential mistakes I made.
