Drogon and Daenerys’ Intensive Training

Have a Theory? Share It Now!

Hey Guys,

First time writing to the podcast but I love listening and have been an avid follower since this new season. I just have a couple burning thoughts from last nights episode that I wanted to share. I will try to make this as structured as I can since it may get long. Bear with me!

Burning the “Innocents”:

First, because I know this is where a lot of people will love to instantly accuse Dany of being the Mad Queen. I don’t think she deserves this. I think its important to remember that the citizens of King’s Landing are in no way innocent at all. These are the people who cheered for Ned’s beheading, who cursed and laughed at Cersei being paraded naked through the streets. Throughout the series the main characters have made a point to note the level of depravity and evil that these “innocent” people have sunk to and how much of a cesspit the city has become. I feel that most of those people in the city deserved to die and at least most of their deaths were fast.

Level Up! D&D time!

Alright, so I’ve heard it talked about in your instacast and I’ve talked about this before as well with others. You guys bring up a great point that Drogon and Dany seem to have gone on some pretty intense training journeys and are now a death-dealing-duo that can’t be stopped. And that’s how it should be! The only times the dragon’s have ever been killed is when they were caught off guard! That and they had no pilots which mean no plot armor! But in all seriousness, Drogon has always been a badass and this time they knew what they were getting themselves into. Dany approached from almost right above the fleet, so the scorpions had to shoot into the sun, not the best thing for a weapon that requires precise aim at a moving target, not to mention none of those sailors had sunglasses on! Come on Qyburn, you should’ve invented those by now! They went right for the scorpions, the only threat they had. Smart. Stopped to take a quick breather but those damn bells were so annoying, time to quiet those down too. I digress. The dragon’s have always been meant to be the nukes of this realm and have delivered on that only a few times and I feel like it was high time for us to see the true destruction a single, not even fully grown, dragon can cause. Dany too is more motivated than ever and you can’t say she hasn’t learned from the past with her piloting and has gotten better and better each time we see her.

Taking a Breather

I wanted to talk about the scene before Dany flies off to destroy the city where she stops for a second on the wall. The important thing to note is that she stops destroying things as soon as she’s finished destroying all threats to Drogon. Smart. BUT the important thing to note is that initially, she destroys no more than she needs to in order to secure her safety, and allow her army to take the city. It’s in this moment that the bulk of the Lannister forces surrender their weapons and the bells are sounded. The red keep still stands though and for Dany, it is a symbol of her enemies power. It is where Cersei is and the last stronghold of the city. Cersei, who killed her best friend and one of her children. Cersei who betrayed Dany’s trust and didn’t come north to help in the Great War. Cersei who murdered Dany’s allies and destroyed her Westerosi allies (the Dornish and Tyrells). All of this, and Dany still stopped to think for a second to make sure that this is what she wanted to do. Dany showed restraint and then decided that she has been shown no mercy by her enemies and is sick of giving others what they refuse to give her back. I don’t think it’s madness at all for Dany to fly off and burn the city, quite the opposite actually. I think it was a smart move, motivated by powerful emotions, and it secured her victory even tighter. The populace now knows not to fuck with her. The only downside to this is that her allies may not like it, although the only allies that have an issue with it are conveniently main characters, Jon, Arya, Tyrion. But Grey Worm was happy to be able to exact his full revenge on the forces that killed his love and betrayed his Queen.

Prophecies be Damned
Alright, so this is interesting because it mostly pertains to the differences between the prophecies in the book and their counterparts in the show. The first I wanted to look at was the Magy the Frog prophecy. In the books it is stated that a younger sibling (Valonqar) will be the one to kill her so most people who watch the show are expecting it to be Jaime or Tyrion. But in the show the prophecy they give for her in Season 5 Ep. 1, the witch makes no mention of this part of the prophecy and so the show does not hold itself beholden to this part of the prophecy. But I still feel that they did honor this part. Falling rocks may not be a little sibling, but who was it who led her to the dragon skull caverns, Jaime, her younger sibling. And who was it who gave Jaime the idea to lead Cersei that way, Tyrion! SO in a way, her younger brothers were to cause of her undoing and therefore fulfill that prophecy! Not totally on their own, but they contribute to it in a large way.

As for the other prophecies, we’ve seen them come to fruition, whether its Dany’s vision in the house of the undying and the ashen throne. Or the vision that Bran had of the dragon over kings landing aka Drogon.

These are just my quick thoughts for now so they may not be well explained, but I hope that you guys enjoy them and understand what I am trying to say! I can’t wait to hear more of your thoughts and I love the show so I really appreciate that you guys keep a more respectful approach to the episodes than most do. I feel like many are too quick to criticize but oh well
