Episode Two Was Disappointing

People have complained about season two and, aside from general confusion, the lack of “stakes” was central to the complaints. Westworld is at its best when it is wrestling with gray areas. The conflicts are metaphysical and philosophical in nature. The struggle between dynamic opposites is not most compelling when waged from the extremes. It is the close quarters combat where the souls is conflicted that makes the deepest cut. In season one William is falling in love despite his nature. He is struggling and resentful. In season two he is fully formed fully black. Same. Same with Delores, one note. The season was saved by Maybe and Ackchetta(sp). Sunday’s episode was the first time I was truly disappointed. The episode was flat. There were no stakes at all. The characters lacked any real motivation. Why would Maybe kill herself, why would she want to go back to the forge, why would Bernard change Stubb’s without his consent, why would Stubb’s do anything he’s not a real character. The mystery of the big big is revealed to a great winter. Who is this guy, why do we care. How about teasing his identity and motivation first. So the whole season ginger on a human we have never met before and have no relationship with who might just be a host. Not to mention the D and D cameo which featured a dragon – why – how does this add to the story. Cheap gimmick felt too much like GOT seasons 7 and 8. I am worried!

I have also been worried. I am hoping that Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy are going to give us more satisfying writing that the double D’s over at GOT. We shall see.
