The person Maeve was supposed to meet may have been a trapdoor put in by the writers in case Sir Anthony was not available in later seasons. A new character could parachute in and introduce himself as Ford’s associate from the mainland and the story moves along. It’s not deus ex machina – the writers can point to the setup in the season 1 finale. Babylon 5’s writer JMS had several of these trapdoors for his characters so he could move storylines as needed due to needs for casting changes.
