1. Ford built Bernard because true genius needs another genius or near genius to appreciate what they have done or are doing. Arnold was the brilliant programmer and Ford the engineer who created the complex machinery that created the physical form of the hosts. Ford, like some Silicon Valley CEOs, maybe Aspergers. Unable to reliably read or sympathize with other humans. Arnold served to give the hosts souls. Arnold was real, and his despair at being able to save his son, port him into a host (refusal to do so?) led him to assisted suicide.
2. 47 original hosts = the 47 ronin. Coincidence? Aren’t they all now masterless?
3. Host nation and Maeve. Ghost Nation has a primary mission to protect specific humans. That’s why Maeve’s stop command initially works and then their prime directive (protect specific management humans) supercedes that command. Note they pursue Maeve, Hector and Sizemore but they offer no violence. No spears thrown, no arrows shot. They don’t mean to harm Sizemore. And I agree with Big D, Hector is programmed to not be able to harm these protectors.
4. Ghost Nation and Grace, for these same reasons Grace will be unharmed and kept by them from wherever Stubbs escaped from in timeline A (2 weeks post the massacre at Escalante)
5. Bernard is coded to observe and act based on his primary mandate: support humans in positions of authority. As a foil to Ford, a bit of a sychophantic lickspittle, and to make up for Ford’s inability to make the hosts seem human. He serves to provide the host with soul. Note that he remains completely unresponsive to Strand after Stubbs intervenes with the Spec Ops team, but did whatever Charlotte demanded of him after the massacre. Bernard’s programming has changed and he is repaired after he is found on the beach. Either he is Teddy in Bernard’s shell or he is Bernard reprogrammed by Delores to further her own agenda.
6. Charlotte only cares about her masters and their demands. Remember she had stated that there would be no intervention/rescue for up to two weeks unless they found Abernathy and delivered him. Her singular mission is finding the data that Delos has been collecting. She treats Bernard like shit because he’s Delos Management and she as a Director of the Board has power over him and also because he was markedly passive during their post Escalante massacre time together. She abandons him and looks for fire power when it’s clear to her that he is useless to getting her to her mission goal, which she believed at that point required firepower.
7. Delores and Fort Forlorn: at the beginning of the fire fight you see QA members who take fire and fall as they approach the Confederados fortifications. She orders them all killed because she wants those bodies for reprogramming. The Conferados were ungovernable unless they all died and were reprogrammed. Which raises another question/thought: why do we assume QA are human? Why would you hire humans in the future to be security? And if you were hiring humans, having had a prior massacre at the park, wouldn’t you hire Ex-Spec Ops? Folks who have the training and capabilities to implement advanced military tactics and capable of being truly ruthless? I wonder if those troops weren’t hosts. Just like Bernard.
8. One last thought. Is Bernard as found on the Beach with all the dead hosts a canard? Has Delores decided that the best way to destroy humanity is by assuming human form and escaping with a small group off island to use the weapon once back in the real world? Did she give up her army of subservient hosts and have Bernard kill them all? Is Delores now Bernard?
My thoughts after viewing episode 3 twice and listening to both your insta-cast and follow up deep dive. Great work, keep them coming

Thanks for pointing out that QA soldiers are wounded or killed by host bullets in this episode. During the Deep Dive, I misspoke and said I didn’t believe they’d been harmed by the ammunition.
