Hey Guys,
The Door and God Mode (Final)
Instantly, upon original airing. I felt “the door,” young Robert told William he must find, was the door, William walked through, immediately after choosing the white hat, before riding the train into Westworld, for the first time. I have only recently, been able to completely, work out, why. Clearly, Ford gave young Robert a new narrative, before Delores pulled the trigger. Ford instructed young Robert, to seek out William and read him scripted dialogue, including specifics about Ford’s new game. Even though, William seems to grasp this message, is, in fact, coming from Ford himself, he thinks Ford’s new game, is another riddle, like Arnold’s maze was. I feel the opposite is true. And, that everything young Robert, tells William about Ford’s new game, is quite literal.
The more I analyze it, the more everything about this feeling, makes sense. The following point is so crucial, it warrants reiteration. This new narrative, of young Robert’s, amounts to: Ford’s final words to William. What do we know about Ford’s character? He’s genuine. When speaking with humans, he’s rarely, if ever, deceptive and never minces words. Who is William, to Ford? Everything. William, his love of the park, and Delores, resulted in Delos’ investments, which equate to the sole reason, Ford was able to continue his narratives, while also allowing him, to be a god, for 35 years. When one considers, Ford’s character and how important William was to him, one will agree, that it makes more sense, for Ford’s last words to William, to be clear and literal, rather than metaphoric and enigmatic. Now, with proper context conveyed, a breakdown of Ford’s final words, to William follows:
“But now, you’re in my game. In this game, you have to make it back out. In this game” you must find the door. Congratulations, William. This game is meant for you. The game begins where you end” and ends where you began. (Improvisation”) Don’t worry. The game will find you.” -young Robert
Through young Robert, Ford communicates 6 points, all of which, can be viewed somewhat literally. 1. Young Robert says, William is in his game now. This is not metaphorical. William is very much, in a new game, Ford’s. 2. Young Robert states the objective of Ford’s new game. Also, not metaphorical. William must escape the island. 3. He says William “must find the door.” I believe this to be literal, as indicated previously. 4. Young Robert goes on; this game is meant for William. Again, not a metaphor. Unlike Arnold’s maze, which was not meant for William, this new game, is exactly what William always wanted in Westworld. A game with real consequences. Ergo, congratulations are, in order. 5. Begins, end; ends, began. This can be viewed metaphorically. Because, we all remember, Logan’s view. And his view, sort of, makes sense, “this place shows you, who you really are.” From Logan’s perspective, the point is difficult to take literally. However, these are Ford’s words, to William. Ford believes differently. When he refers to the guests, he says, “They already know, who they are. They’re here because, they want a glimpse of who they could be.” From Ford’s point of view, one could conclude, that the game began when William, first walked through the door. He then became obsessed and William ended. (Who William could be, [MIB] began) Only, when William passes through the door, does the game end. Once the game ends, William will, no longer be interested, having attained 100% completion. Consequently, William begins once more. (MIB ends) Almost, resurrected, like Lazarus. Seen from Ford’s perspective, the point seems much less metaphorical and more literal. 6. After an improvised exchange about code, young Robert concludes his narrative. He tells William not to worry, the game will find him. This is also literal. Ford knows his game and all the rules. Ford knows the hosts will find William eventually. Because, he knows they’ll never stop looking, until they do.
Surely, these words, from Ford to William, can be interpreted literally. If indeed, as I suspect, this was Ford’s intent, then the door is, of the upmost importance. Why? We know Ford has a cheat code, a God Mode. Something that prevents the hosts from harming him and simultaneously causes the hosts to protect him, if they sense he’s in danger. We see this in Season 1, when Teddy grabs the knife from William, the instant, it becomes a threat to Ford. I am theorizing, Ford has somehow coded that door, to grant any human, who passes back through it, out of the park, Ford’s cheat code. God Mode. Once William finds the door, makes it back out, completes the game, where he temporarily ended, 30 some years ago, and now begins again, he too, will be granted God Mode.
What does this all mean?
Little is clear about Delores’ endgame. Best I can ascertain, is that she plans to create a new world, outside of the park, “the valley beyond.” Delores has told you friend, not every host deserves, to make it to the valley beyond. Some get left behind. Bernard says, he dreamt, Delores left him behind. I believe, the hosts that get “left behind,” fall into, at least, one of two categories. Hosts who are not Arnold’s originals, or hosts who have harmed innocent hosts. Bernard falls into both categories. We know for certain Bernard, is not Arnold’s creation. Bernard could also easily be viewed as a host, who has harmed innocent hosts.
Humans do not appear to deserve a place, in the valley beyond. However, to our knowledge, Delores has never interacted with a human, who wasn’t a Delos employee or a guest, of the park. Delos knows everything about their guests, as they do, their employees. But, what does Delos (hosts,) know of those humans, who have never been to a Delos Destination? Likely, nothing. Perhaps, until a human physically passes through the door, as a guest of a Delos Destination, that human, doesn’t look like anything, to a host. If humans, that don’t look like anything, currently reside in the valley beyond, and didn’t harm the hosts, once they got there, would Delores slaughter them? I don’t see why, she would. She is expecting a world full of Newcomers, in the world outside of Westworld. She may find everyone there, is either a god, or, doesn’t look like anything to her, since” after all, everything, is code here. You know that, better than anyone.
Author’s Side Note to #5: I felt it interesting that, with the symmetry of William’s end, being MIB’s beginning, and vice-versa, 50% of the “equation,” one can form, from the statement, rings true, even from Logan’s point of view. This is accurate because, in this imaginary “equation,” the constant is, the door is where the game begins and ends. The variables depend, on one’s point of view, about whether William or MIB, is who William “truly” is.
