Why is everyone assuming that the Night King is some genius military tactician when we have visual evidence from Season 7 that he is not? Remember when Jon and co. went beyond the Wall to capture a dead dude? Well when Dany lands Drogon on that little island the Night King could have easily killed Drogon right then and there. Not only would a stationary dragon be an easier target than one flying through the air in the distance, but it would have effectively stranded Dany, Jon, and the rest of them.
The Night King could have ended it all but for some inexplicable reason chose to target Viserion with that first ice spear instead of Drogon. How can you possibly reconcile those two ideas?
