GOT 805 – What Is Missing? Why Haven’t We Connected?

Hi guys,

Great podcast, and credit to you all for investing the time and energy into what you do – simply outstanding.

I am anticipating you will likely receive a lot of negativity around the latest GOT episode and I think the majority is likely to be warranted and understand. As a fan of the show, I feel the last two series have been a diversion from what made the show so special in the first place. I haven’t felt the unexpected emotional response to any events in the past few years – nothing that comes close to the Red Wedding, Oberian’s death and of course Ned’s beheading. But this got me thinking – exactly why is this?

And that is the question I wanted to ask your opinion on – if you feel the same way is this the case?

I personally don’ think it is necessarily the overall story the double Ds have chosen to tell (you will never please everyone) I think its more in the detail of how they have chosen to tell to it. We have departed from the unexpected and often the reality in preference of the movie like pay off moments ie. shooting down a dragon with 3/3 arrows, Jaime just happens to meet Euron on the beach, way too many survivors from the battle of Winterfell, etc, etc, etc.

Just look at Hound – in previous season’s he would have simply had his head crushed. And although this isn’t the fairy-tail ending it’s probably what should have happened. Instead, a heroic move type death into the burning fire with his brother. This is not GOT.

Arya leaving when she is literally minutes from seeing Cersi again – no way. The Hound tells here leave – early season Arya would have told him to f*ck off and beat him into the throne room. There was even a story to be told in how they got to Kingslanding and how the got into the Red Keep!

I can’t dispute the cinematography of any of the episodes – amazing. But somewhere along the way, this has become more important than the story and we lost what made the series unique and special.

So I bit of a ramble – but just an attempt to better understand why I feeling a bit empty post episode and in doing so than trying to seek an alternative view on the story.
