GOT: Sansa And Dany

Hi guys!

Just started listening to the podcast and already love it. During the instacast I was a little surprised at your interpretation of the Dany and Sansa scene as it seemed to be a very calculated, strategic conversation from both sides. Dany’s whole speech about how much she loves Jon and how he made her come to the North seemed very forced. It seems like Dany walked into the conversation thinking she could easily manipulate Sansa by appealing to her love for her family and flattering her. I honestly believe that the only reason Dany truly is in the North is because she’s too smart to risk sacrificing the lives of everyone because it means she would have nothing to rule at the end of it all. Unlike Cersei, she does believe in the danger of the whitewalkers and sees this as a necessary step to protecting the lands and the people that she is looking to control. I’ve rewatched the scene a couple of times and while I do think that Dany manages to grab her for a moment, Sansa is too smart to pulled in that easily. She mentions that the North wants to Starkxit from the union because she knows that this will immediately show where Dany’s loyalty lies. If she truly felt as deeply for Jon as she says she does, giving the North back to the Starks wouldn’t really matter. After all, the North is like the Alaska of the Seven Kingdoms: it’s cold, not many people live there, and the one’s that do tend to mind their own business anyway. Dany’s power-hungry attitude makes her incapable of giving up reign of even a single part of the seven kingdoms. Dany was too calculated when she walked into the conversation and underestimated Sansa, and Sansa was ready to call her out on it. I think that saying that Sansa is stupid for asking Dany about the North is an interpretation that only works if you believe that Dany was being sincere, though I truly believe it was an act. Another interesting thing to note about this scene is the costuming. Dany still looks like she’s dressing as royalty with her furs and beautifully styled and braided hair whereas Sansa looks like she’s serious and ready for war with her black, armored dress, and all of her hair pulled back from her face. These visual cues seem to be setting up the fact that Dany isn’t taking this as seriously as she needs to be. I think there could be some hijinx, especially since she doesn’t seem too happy about the conversation in the crypt, and that she could end up endangering northerners for the sake of her own heroicism. All of this is pretty much meant to justify my delusions that Sansa might live until the end and that Dany might die, though both seem kind of unlikely at this point.

Can’t wait to hear your opinions throughout the week, keep up the good work!
