Hey Shat on TV!

Long time listener, first time telegrapher here! First let me say that the ShatOn series of podcasts are not only my favorite “deep dive” movies and TV podcasts around, but some of my most enjoyable hours of every week! Rog will probably recognize me as Vermouth Magician (@rfalig) on twitter and I’m so thankful for everything you guys do and the community you have built. Okay, onto my telegraph, centered mostly around the man in black (hereafter: MIB)…

A couple of weeks ago I put myself through a test. I had an hour to spare and I popped GTA V in my Xbox and tried to do what I enjoyed as a teen: turn on the cheat codes and create carnage for carnage sake. It was my twisted way of getting back at a world I view as full of anger and hate and violence. However, even in a virtual world, I struggled to affect pain and death, even against code, without consequences. I found myself just driving various cars around the map. It was surreal.

MIB is the exact opposite. He would have popped in the game and gone nuts; killing everything in sight because there are no consequences. This has held true since his first venture into the park after his falling out with Logan. What I mean to say is MIB’s “stain” has been apparent through the majority of his screen time in Westworld, but it speaks to how damaged and deranged he is. Some individuals have this “stain”, and some don’t. I’m not trying to say anyone who kills for fun in GTA has the same “stain” just that I feel there is likely a correlation and it speaks to a broader societal issue too long to present here.

MIB finds delight in violence, and truly his violent delights had violent ends as he played a role in the deaths of all the people close to him (Juliet, Emily, Logan, etc.). I think his story is a tale we can each look at and self-investigate to see if we have the same “stain” as him. That’s the majority of my thoughts on this. Looking forward to hearing more content from you guys soon!

Do you think that makes MiB more of a sympathetic character? He seems cursed with an illness, or stain, that he can’t escape. For him, there apparently is no peace or satisfaction. Maybe that’s why we don’t completely loathe him as viewers.
