Hi Guys,

Long time listener first time writing in. I started listening to you guys when I first discovered Westworld after the 1st season finished. Little late to the the game, I know. But I binged all of season one over a few days. However Westworld is the kind of show that deserves water cooler analysis, which I missed out on. Then I discovered your podcasts. I am so glad you guys do what you do. You’re different personalities and generational experiences give me a refreshing and complete perspective on Westworld and the movies. I look forward to every podcast you put out, and it brings smile to my face when I listen to you at work and during my commute. I’m doing season 2 right by watching on Sundays, and listening to every podcast asap.

Just a general observation for season two- did you guys catch that the mountain in the opening sequence near the end is Mount Fuji-just before the lady is dipped in the water? To me this further reinforces that Shogun world will become a bigger part of the narrative as season 2 unfolds. I wonder why they left out any imagery around Raj world?

It’s no wonder that the show runners would include samurai lore into the show. Pre-modernization Japan was always seen as a parallel to the wild Wild West, with its widespread lawlessness and feudal battles between warring samurai. I’m sure that season 2 will bring back Akira Kurosawa directorial sensibilities and style, as the trailers for episode 5 teased this week. Keep up the good work guys!

Best,
Ron Academia from Hercules CA.

As a student of the Japanese language, culture and cinema – I truly enjoyed this brief respite from the Mesa and Dolores stories as the show introduced Shogun World.

I Just listened to your deep dive, and once again I appreciated your analysis. I do believe the writers wouldn’t spend 40 minutes exploring Maeve’s greater self-discovery and motherly support of Akane & Sakura without a significant payoff sometime later in the season. Maybe Maeve will be able to “persuade” the incoming warriors to do her bidding as she approaches what I see as a possible standoff with Delos QA or Dolores’ horde.

With Dolores and Teddy, I was gripped with dread that somehow Teddy was going to get dropped permanently from the group. Maybe I’m so invested in their looping romance from season 1, that I somehow want them to ultimately end up together – even in death as Romeo and Juliet.

Some have suggested on the internet that Dolores wants to eventually kill off Teddy in order to “burn” and scare off the flies. When she shows him the carcass, she says that she doesn’t want him to become this (dead piece of meat). Some of them will need to burn if they will survive the incoming swarm. After which, the tech radically changes his parameters – at the risk of permanent damage to Teddy.

I think Dolores means for Teddy to survive with her through her journey – however at the risk of losing his former self that we all grew to love. Truly some dark stuff, and I can’t wait for next Sunday.

I am sad that we are already at the halfway point of this seemingly fast season.

We hope Episode 5, “Akane no Mai,” gave you all the feudal Japan you could ever want. What did you think of the episode?
