What If There Are Multiple Copies of Hosts?

Hi Big D, Gene & Rog,

I don’t have a fully-developed, full-blown, coherent theory, all I have are questions:

  1. What if there are multiple copies of hosts? Wouldn’t it be practical to have copies? This might explain Dolores seeing herself, Maeve being sent in again to Felix & Sylvester after lunch, and Lawrence being in Pariah shortly after we see him being drained of blood by the Man-in-Black.
  2. Do the tricks or cheats the Man-in-Black knows (like that cigar-request for explosives we saw in Episode 4) include how to command the hosts to go away, like Dr. Ford does? We’ve seen Dr. Ford say these commands – it’s like there’s a syntax he uses, one key element seems to be that they end in a tag question. A couple of examples: “You’ll put yourself away again, won’t you, Bill?” to Bill in cold storage in Episode 1. “You’re not gonna come back here again, are you?” to the boy when he sent him away in Episode 2.

Here in Episode 5, the Man-in-Black tells the boy host “Fetch us some, would you?” when he sent him away to get water. Is this proof that he knows how to command the hosts to go away?

Note also that at the end of Dr. Ford, Man-in-Black & Teddy’s drink, Dr. Ford says to Teddy: “Mr. Flood, we must look back and smile at perils past, mustn’t we?”. What did he mean? Is he commanding Teddy to do something in the event of some peril as Teddy accompanies the Man-in-Black in finding the center of the maze?

  3. Re the title of the episode Contrapasso. Taking “contrapasso” to mean getting commensurate punishment for past transgressions, I just thought, is Dolores’s “modest little loop” her punishment for her role in whatever happened to Arnold, or to the disaster that occurred 30 years ago (assuming that they are related)?
  4. Re the last scene. When we see Dolores look at the maze on top of the coffin, and the camera switches angles so we see that William and Lawrence are NOT there, Dolores is standing very strangely, stiff, and she’s moving ever so slightly, it’s like she was glitching. What is happening here? Could it be that she is getting updated? Receiving info on what she’s supposed to do next? Interesting notion, eh?

This is all I have for now. Thanks for reading!

Cheers, -imogen

  1. Jim says:

While it’s a reasonable idea to have multiple copies of a host, I don’t think the writers would incorporate that into the story. They are trying to get it’s to develop connections with the hosts, to see them as nearly human. If there are multiple Dolores, Maeve, or Clementine hosts then they are just interchangeable parts, but unique individuals. It compromises my ability to connect with a unique character. Plus, it becomes a really weak crutch.

    Of course, it’s possible, but…
