Long time listener going back to the beginning of Westworld season 1. I normally rely on your podcast to give me insight that I would otherwise have not achieved on my own. But with all due respect (even if your motley crew isn’t due any), I feel like you have missed the forest for the trees regarding episode 6 of season 2. It seems clear to me that the opening scene where Doloris tells Bernard “no, he wouldn’t have said that.” is a clear sign that Host Bernard’s job is to monitor hosts as they develop in their loops. Here we see that Doloris was involved in ensuring that Bernard’s host version would be inline with Ford’s objectives for the future before they introduced him to the staff. This means that Doloris was sentient going back to at least before Bernard took a host form. Obviously Doloris is Ford’s main effort to usher in his new storyline. It’s likely that she was putting up an “unwoke” front in season 1. This seems like the most straight forward interpretation of the scene.
Directly after the scene where Doloris shows that she is giving a Turing test to Bernard, she is playing the piano at the sweet water saloon. Playing the piano has always symbolized the entity that is directing things. Last season the piano played on it’s own signifying the autopilot of the park, this season in the opening the piano is being played by a host signifying that the hosts are sentient and controlling themselves. Showing Doloris playing the piano signifies that she is controlling things. My guess is that she is doing so in the human world in coordination with a virtual Ford.
Hope this finds you doing well.
