Should we assume the army of the dead is marching on Winterfell? Why not skip Winterfell and march on King’s landing? It currently has smaller armed forces defending it with the potential of adding the entire population of kings landing plus the golden company to the army of the dead. Going where the other larger army isn’t to attack a poorly defended unprepared position has happened twice in the show before The Battle of Whispering Woods and The Sack of Highgarden. The Knight King has used patience and planning not just his overwhelming numbers to achieve his desired goals so far.
