Nic the writer and director two notes from season 1 after show HBO commentary:

1. Nic Got defensive that his main characters : Hart and Cohle were not anti-hero’s but they were true hero’s . Same theme on season 3 , detectives will be defended in the end as hero’s . True detective means true Hero’s.

2. Nic points out Russ was asking for beers during his interrogation so to avoid any possible self incrimination. Nic is doing the same season 3. Wayne defense for a possible reveal on the tv show will be his mental condition for crimes of a hero.
