The Fate Of The Dragons

Have a Theory? Share It Now!

Hi guys,

Long time listener since the Westworld days – was incredible psyched that you were taking on GoT and think you’ve been doing a kickass job. Keep it up!

So last week there was a really interesting fan email sent in that you addressed. It talked about the fate of the dragons and how they would die in the same/similar way as their namesakes died. I loved this theory and think we have some new information that makes it more plausible.

1) Drogon – Drogon will die the way Khal Drogo did. There are, of course, two ways to look at this. The first was addressed in last week’s email; that a bolt from the scorpion would cause a wound to Drogon that would infect, fester, and kill him (note: umm….actually Miri Maz Durr did not poison Drogo. Drogo was just an awful patient who took off the wound dressings and refused to take the meds that he was given. Only when the Khal was near the brink of death did Miri think it was safe to betray Dany by promising to “bring him back” knowing it would only bring back a zombified Drogo). The other interpretation, is that Dany herself will have to kill Drogon. Remember, the wound to Drogo’s shoulder is what caused him to need magic to sustain his life; this magic rendered Drogo a zombified version of his past self. Not wanting to see her beloved suffer, Dany took mercy and killed him. We could have a situation where Drogon either 1) dies and is brought as a wight or 2) is weakened and can be controlled by someone like Bran or the Night’s King and, in either situation, Drogon is likewise “not himself” and Dany takes it upon herself to kill him to save him.

2) Rhaegal – Prince Rhaegar was killed by Robert, aka Bobby B, crushing his chest in with a war hammer in the riverlands. Now that we have Gendry back in the game, wielding a hammer not unlike that of his father, perhaps Gendry will be in a situation where he is in battle facing off against a dragon. Gendry joined Team Jon; Team Jon is ok with Team Dany for now, but there’s plenty of fertile ground for the two to be at odds (like Jon and Dany learning Jon is a Targaryen with a better claim to the throne). Also, in the “Behind the Episode” the writers were really shady about why they brought Gendry back. They said something like “Well, we needed to get Tyrion into Kings Landing, and I guess it made sense to have Davos do something other than just hang by the boat, so we had him go find Gendry.” Right, as if they were considering just writing him out of the plot, rowing away since season 3? No way. They knew he was coming back and I think he will have a big role in the wars to come.

3) Viserion – Dany’s lil’bitch of brother died when molten gold was poured over his head. Brutal. Well, we might have some molten gold on it’s way to kick some dragon ass. The Golden Company. Cersei is probably going to hire this legendary mercenary company to fight Dany. And as much as I love Jaime, if there’s an army that will be able to match the unsullied, it’s the GC. These guys are the BEST mercenary company in Essos, known to NEVER break a contract once they’ve signed on. If Cersei hires these guys to take down Dany, they’re not going to turn tail and get their rep because of a dragon. There’s more – the Golden Company was founded by a Bittersteel. Bittersteel is a Targaryen bastard who fought for the Blackfyres in the Blackfyre Rebellion (this was an inter-Targaryen war where a legitimized Targ bastard decided to make House Blackfyre and take the throne from the actual heir). The Blackfyre Rebellion was put down by, none other than, Brynden Rivers (AKA Bran’s teacher the 3-eyed raven). But Bittersteel survived and went on with his men to create the Golden Company, in hopes of raising men and funds to destroy House Targaryen for good. If there’s any group of people motivated to try to murder a dragon, it’s the GC. The molten part might have to do with the fact that more than a few of these dudes will likely get barbequed in the process.

I think this theory has a lot of promise and would force the plot forward to see just what kind of leader Dany would be without her dragons.

Cheers,

Ken L
