The Key Is Maeve!

Have a Theory? Share It Now!

Wanted to start off by saying that I’ve been massively enjoying your podcast so far. I started listening on Monday and I’m catching up now (still haven’t heard your ep4 review so this might already be stated) and I didn’t even bother looking for another podcast.

I gotta admit, I wasn’t really sold on the whole “separate timeline” bit with Will/Logan’s story. However, after episode 4 I’m starting to see some more evidence to this. We saw Logan go out of his way to pick up a better revolver, possibly foreshadowing the idea of weapon upgrades in the park that might eventually lead to Will getting the Man in Black (MiB)’s pistol and a couple other ideas.

That being said, I did notice something that I personally have not seen anyone else bring up. I believe that (for now) it can serve as a possible distinction between the past timeline and the Bernard/Teddy timeline.

The key is Maeve!

I went back to episode 2 and 3 to confirm (since from 3 onward, the duo are no longer in sweetwater), but in all the scenes of the brothel/saloon, Maeve is not seen! Now, sure, one could argue that she took the day off, but Clementine is there in full force with no hint about her that anything is different. Also, we see on 2 separate days where the main interactions with prostitutes only includes Clem, no Maeve.

The editors were very clever in their cuts and they cut back and forth from when Maeve and Teddy are talking in the saloon (while she’s being adjusted for aggression and such) and Will/Logan getting around. But (as of yet), Teddy has yet to be seen in Will/Logan scenes at all. This also helps reinforce the theory that Teddy is indeed Will’s (or Logan’s?) conscience transferred into a host to live out their days with Dolores. This is especially true when you consider how MiB treats Teddy.

So yeah, I think that the moments we see Maeve, we can assume (again, for now) that we are in Teddy/Bernard timeline. In fact, I wonder if Maeve might’ve still been in her previous narrative at this point as a mother in that remote locale that gets attacked by natives. Maybe Will/Logan will come across her at some point, cluing in the rest of the audience that this is the past?

On a related, but unrelated note, I wanted to share a stupid crack-pot theory about Teddy real quick. So I can agree that Teddy is Will (maybe Logan’s) consciousness downloaded into a host, but I have 3 separate ideas about the situation.

  1. Will downloaded himself into Teddy, leaving his old body, thus possibly making Logan the MiB
  2. Will downloaded a COPY of himself to Teddy but went on living to become the MiB
  3. Will became the MiB, Logan had a change of heart for Dolores at some point and became Teddy.
  4. (The crazy one) This is gonna be like Superman 3 and the “Good” part of Will goes into Teddy while the “Bad” part remains as the MiB. But honestly at this point I kinda rule this out since the MiB is starting to show his colors more and might be more of a good guy then we anticipated (especially with him apparently knowing about Arnold now). Still, would be awesome to call that now and have that come true. Granted, I would probably be massively disappointed in the show.

Anywho, I’m real sorry I took up so much of your time, hopefully no one’s brought this up yet (or I missed some clear indicative that this theory is wrong).

Either way, keep up the fantastic work guys! I’ll listen to Ep 4 tomorrow on the drive home!

P.S. the hour-long timeline works perfect because that’s generally how long it takes me to get to work with traffic in the morning. Also it’s just the right amount of time to get a good in-depth analysis but not start rambling on too long! You guys are great! – Fabio from Florida
