First off, thanks for your efforts – the podcast has been fun to listen to and I appreciate the time you put into it. With that out of the way, just going to slap it down: you guys got it all wrong. Here’s why:

Sentient hosts was an accident. There’s an analog in the atomic bomb… the scientists wanted to nuke Hitler, they had no other plan. Once the Germans were gone and the government took the work they paid for, the scientists were grief-stricken by their actions. What was once a noble pursuit became apocalypse in a bottle.

I believe Arnold and Ford wanted hosts that were “more lifelike” (and it’s explained early on how not-lifelike the early hosts were) and in the quest for that grail, discovered consciousness. I think that Arnold faced his demons early, Ford faced his late. They both regret creating zoo-life forms and realize they owe it to that life-form to make amends. I think that he has been, for the last 35 years, trying to make it possible for this “life” that he and Arnold made to get its best possible start. Had this happened any sooner, the hosts themselves would not have been ready for it.

Anyway – that’s the nutshell of my argument. I could over-labor it but it won’t further the idea.

Will look forward to the next podcast – thanks for your work.

Cheers,

Jason C.

  1. Jim says:

Sentient hosts was not an accident. It’s possible that it was not Ford’s intent, but it was clearly established that Arnold was using the theory of the bicameral mind to try and create sentient life. He was trying to evolve Dolores into a conscious, sentient being.

This may be what young Ford went storming in to confront Arnold about, Ford discovered that Arnold was trying to create conscious, sentient beings. But, it wasn’t an accident. It was what Arnold was working on.
