True Detective Season 3
You don’t comment on the music in the show.
The Handsome Family’s “Far From Anywhere” for the opening of all of Season 1 is one of the all-time great openings- right up there with the various artists doing Tom Waits’ “Way Down In The Hole” for all seasons of The Wire. Leonard Cohen’s “Everybody Knows” was the best thing in Season 2- in my opinion.
Episode 1 of season 3 closes with “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) sung by the writer of the song Mickey Newbury. He was influenced by The Byrds “Eight Miles High”. The Kenny Rogers-First edition version is played in The Big Lebowski where it’s used to comic effect. But check out the lyrics- there’s a real darkness there. DRUGS. CVS… Oh, and Rogers” version was also used in the 1983 film……….Purple Haze. Jimi Hendrix’s wrote the song Purple Haze and it’s very druggy. And of course,… Well you get the picture. Maybe it’s all just a coincidence, but the music editor for the show, T-Bone Burnett is pretty sharp. Episode 2 ends with no music-silence. And with that I’ll shut up.
Keep up the good work.
Sincerely
Brian C. Fedorcik
