Villains, Motives and Marvel Comics

Hi Guys,

On the subject of villains and motives, Cirac is quite similar to Magneto from Marvels X-men line of comics (one of the greatest villains ever created). Like Cirac, he was shaped in tragedy (a concentration camp in WWII) and seeing the worst side of human nature he decides he wants to build a better world for his kind (maybe he’s not so bad), no matter what it takes (this is the bad part). He’s not evil evil, just a very angry, very powerful old man that has seen the worst side of human nature.

So despite his best intentions, it’s always going to be his actions that define him as the villain; the ends never justify the means is how most comic book morality is written.

Also interestingly Marvel’s ‘Civil War 2 ‘event had a similar premise with a new mutant being able to see the future. One side uses that power to neutralise threats before they acted while the other side called their actions unjust as punishing someone for something they hadn’t done yet is generally considered a dick move.

The point being these were possible futures that were not set in stone. Human decision making is really a second order chaotic system where telling someone of the choices they will make in the future will affect their final choice.

This is why showing people the data analysis on them was so damaging to the model. When you are aware of the prediction then it’s less likely to happen. Like say you’re doctor tells you in 4 years you’re going to be morbidly obese and die from complications, who’s going to say “oh damn really? just 4 years of my life left?”? no, you find out shit like that and you ask “how do I stop that from happening?” you eat healthier, you start to exercise and you flip fate the middle finger in defiance. Those that resign to fate are just looking for an easy way out, justifying it as out of their control. Which is never the case, you always have a choice.

Alright should probably stop the rant there. This season is fantastic and I’m really enjoying the exploration of choice, freewill and the role predictive ai will play in our evolving society.

Keep up the good work!

Cheers,
G

I love your connection between Magneto and Serac. I think that is spot on. Villains that don’t necessarily mean to be, but are…
