So I found a video on Youtube that was a behind-the-scenes feature for TV back in the day. There’s a scene in which Yul Brynner talks about his character and does reveal that it was indeed an “awakening” of sorts. He says that character starts to remember things that happened to him in the past and starts to chase after the duo at that point and picks up mannerisms like smiling that makes the android feel more human so it continues to grow. I agree that the film should’ve delved more into this but this might at least help sort some things out for some people.

    Guys it was the 70’s
We just had Atari hitting balls back and forth on the tv game just years before.
We had rubber monsters in the scifi movies.
This was awesome for us and was very amazing to see the robot idea coming to life. Give us 70’s peeps some good vibes for getting it started:)

I was fascinated with the original “Westworld” move growing up. I found it in the “cult classics” section of Video Paradise in Chandler, AZ, and must have watched it five times in a weekend. Roger and Dick obviously, didn’t like it as much.
