What a start!

Wow, what a great start to the season, lived up to all my expectations, answered some questions and asked many more new ones. Also, just to take a minute to say the pacing was excellent in this first episode, and the narrative was walking a fine line of disjointed and coherent which worked really well. Leaving us guessing at time frames, perspectives and motives.

A few observations from me around what I think was a critical moment in signaling the direction of Delores and the show. Clearly now that she is presumed sentient, waiting around to be killed by one of the expert QA teams isn’t going to cut it, she wants freedom.

If you reduce her plans down she only really has 2 choices (which rapidly becomes 1). In her hubris she may think that she has a chance of raising a host army and destroying humanity. She has no concept of the size and power of humanity, and from the little evidence she has from the park, she may be fooled into thinking that she is able to overcome the odds and defeat humans. I believe that this will be the main thread for her throughout the first few episodes, she will create an army of sentient hosts and try to overcome the little resistance she finds on the island.

That is until Bernard gets Peter Abernathy out, which is when the pro QA team shows up (our 2 weeks ahead time frame).

I think Bernard has had to drive all the hosts into the sea either as part of the plan to get Peter out, or Delores and co, or both. After her plans to take over the world come crashing down, the only choice she has is to try and hide / integrate with humans (think Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep).

Finally, WTF is the valley? hopefully it’s metaphorical and not literal; but perhaps the valley is where they all died… but didn’t actually die? Perhaps there are some host shells where their sentience got sent to in the real world and now all those who drowned are actually free??? Sooo many questions!!

Of course, this could all be totally wrong, but it’s fun to think about it which is something not many shows achieve. I also love hearing your perspectives so thanks for doing such and awesome show 🙂 you guys rock.

(Now I can go read reddit and sully my views)

Great thoughts, Phil. Did S2E2 change your mind at all? Dolores seems keenly aware of the world outside Westworld. I believe she may understand the predictive power of Delos’ data and how to harness it against outside forces.
