Westworld Season 2 Episode 4 Thoughts

Have a Theory? Share It Now!
Love the podcast. I started listening when you started doing GoT and then listened to every WW podcast after I’d watch each episode about a year ago. It’s so much more fun watching shows in real time rather than binge watching after the fact so you can be in on the conversation and theorize with other fans. I’m glad I’ve found others who share the same level of commitment to this show as me, because my friends do not. I just had to explain all of Sunday’s episode in great detail to my friend Cherry. One of her exact quotes was “So what is William doing with that old man in that room, trying to keep him alive?” at which point I busted out laughing.
My first thought after listening to the deep dive is that the people who don’t like this season or don’t understand what’s going on are just unintelligent, simply put. Maybe unintelligent is harsh, but they just lack the creativity to process what’s happening deeper than what’s handed to them on-screen. I personally like this season 10x better than season 1. I’m extremely Type A and hated not knowing the logistics of the park, hosts, etc. during earlier episodes of season 1. Now that I’ve really wrapped my head around how everything works (or at least I think I have up until this point), I’m ready to dive deeper into the story and what everyone’s end goal is, which is exactly what season 2 is doing for me. If critics of season 2 want more of the gun-slinging, simplistic western world, they should go watch an old western film….. That’s not what this show is, which should have been obvious S1E1. I’d say this show in a nutshell is a futuristic sci-fi that explores what it means to be “alive” and “in control” of your consciousness, while hinting at the dangers and ethical dilemmas of AI that our world will face very soon. They’re simply using “Westworld” as a vehicle to tell that story and make it look visually appealing.
So my main question going forward after ep. 4 is who is the human that Ford asked Bernard to grab the control unit for? I’m thinking it’s got to be either Ford or William.
Ford: He’s dead now, but things seem to be playing out perfectly in his “game”/plan. Which I guess could still be possible if he’d really put in the legwork before he died. And they want you to believe that Ford completely understands the consciousness of everyone and can therefore predict everything that will happen. I don’t know, I just find it hard to believe that he could’ve predicted all of this would happen and that no one would stray from what he he thinks each character will do, whether it be the hosts (Dolores mainly) truly are in control of their consciousness, or that she’s still on his loop that he must have implemented before he died. Which leads me to believe that Ford is now a “host-human hybrid” and is just sitting back still in control, much like he was before. I think this is way too simplistic of an explanation, but it would make sense based on some of the evidence we’re given in season 2.
William: This one is a little more out there than Ford, but still not too far-fetched. I’m thinking Ford had to have known what William and Delos’ plan was with creating the host-human hybrids like Jim Delos. Because let’s be real, Ford knows everything. So follow me here, what if Man in Black died at the massacre or around that time, and “ghost Ford” had Bernard create host-hybrid William. William has no idea that he’s a host this whole time. It’s later revealed (season finale?) that part of Ford’s plan was to “robotize” William all along. Sort of a fuck you, you used my park to further your own agenda and try to “play God” in a way by essentially creating humans that will live forever. I can’t imagine Ford was too happy with William and Jim’s plan (assuming he knew about it). Seems like he would want to be the only one in charge, the only “God-like” figure. So now he’s punishing William by damning him to this new life as a robot, simply put. So then let’s say this all is true, I’m not sure what William would do with this information. I assume he wouldn’t want to live out his life as a “hybrid”, based on his disdain for Jim Delos. Or maybe this information would make him malfunction like Jim. Can’t really say how this theory would play out, but I think it’s possible.
I would bet a lot of money that it’s either Ford or William who Bernard stole the control unit for. It may not be for the reasons I stated above, but I just can’t really see the reasoning behind why it would be for a character besides Ford or William. In actuality, I hope I’m wrong about both of these theories. I think they’re both too simple and too predictable. What’s the point of watching a show like this if you’re able to predict what’s going to happen? The reason I love it so much is because it’s so intricate and exciting. I love having my mind blown, and I’ll be pretty disappointed if it isn’t when this season is all said and done. I have a lot of faith in this show so I’m hoping they’re going to come up with something that none of saw coming but still makes sense and isn’t cheesy or extremely far-fetched. I don’t want a “Jon Snow and Dany will have dragon babies who will sit on the iron throne and defeat the dead” kind of predictability. Which I hope to god isn’t the route taken by GoT season 8, but that’s another discussion entirely.
Should probably get back to work now. Spent the better part of an hour writing that email….
Keep up the good work, guys!

My guess? The control unit was for Grace, William or Ford.
William because I have a feeling he’s ultimately the most important character.
Ford because he might not be done.
Or Grace because she changed her name from Emily and appeared in the park at an awfully significant time.
