Stand By Me (1986)

Stand by Me Quote: “You guys wanna go see a dead body?” – Vern Tessio

Big D was so conflicted on his feelings toward “Stand By Me” that he took an extra 24 hours to process the Rob Reiner classic before delivering his verdict. It’s not a fun movie, per se, but it generated some honest reflection from the Shat Crew.

Gene was reminded of his childhood friendships, his relationship with The King Bee, and adventures along train tracks. Ash lamented Facebook’s refusal to let high school acquaintances fade away, and Big D shared how seeing his first dead body changed his view on death.

Also on this episode, the trio discuss whether parents have favorite children, whether Stephen King is a one-trick pony, how to remove leeches, and a theory on Ace Merrill being turned into David Powers from “The Lost Boys.” And finally, Ash confronts Big D about rumors he wants her off the podcast.

Plot Summary: “Stand by Me” After learning that a stranger has been accidentally killed near their rural homes, four Oregon boys decide to go see the body. On the way, Gordie Lachance (Wil Wheaton), Vern Tessio (Jerry O’Connell), Chris Chambers (River Phoenix) and Teddy Duchamp (Corey Feldman) encounter a mean junk man and a marsh full of leeches, as they also learn more about one another and their very different home lives. Just a lark at first, the boys’ adventure evolves into a defining event in their lives.
