Westworld Immortality Theory

Hey Guys,

I wanna start out by saying that I’m a big fan of the show. Keep up the good work.

I think as it stands, with the trailers and current episodes that are out, I think one key question can be answered. That is, what are the intentions of Delos? Specifically, I think James Delos is planning to use the technology developed in Westworld to become “immortal”.

This is a long email, but I truly believe that you will not be disappointed.

There are more than enough hints that lend credence to this theory. I also know that I’m not the first to say this (it should be noted that I have also been avoiding reddit like the plague, so as not to spoil anything).

So the first piece of evidence to support this viewpoint is the also the most straightforward. It is the conversation between William and James at Jame’s retirement party. As you guys already know, there is evidence that Delos is ill, and might not be alive for much longer.

William says something like “our arrangement is a perfect fit You stepping down doesn’t help.”

James replies by saying “I was told I might not have to…”
The implication of this is that Whatever idea that William sold James on their tour of the park, it involved something with immortality. It’s not just some scheme to collect the park goers’ data for marketing purposes. William strikes me as being too smart and cunning for such lowly ambitions.

Will continues the conversation by saying something along the line of “We’re working on it… and to have patience.”

To which James replies that he “doesn’t have as much time as others.’

As made evident by the prior season, the creators don’t show something, or include dialogue, unless it is something important. The answers are hiding in plain sight. This is clearly saying that when William was selling James on investing more money in the park, he saw something it that could appeal to a very wealthy, very powerful man, who is at the height of his power, but at the end of his life. This is of course immortality. William’s idea must have been something like this. Why else would a powerful individual like that give a shit about a theme park for rich people to shoot, fuck, and dress up like cowboys? Unless he had something to gain from it.

A man about to die would not invest a ridiculous sum of his fortune into what he himself considered to be a waste of an investment, unless he had something big to gain. James is playing the long game. For him the payout will come long down the road.

Now this brings me to the next point, which is if Delos isn’t taking the data from the guests for strictly market research, then what are they doing with it?

To answer this I believe that we have to examine Westworld’s clientele. To even be able to afford to go to the park you have to be insanely wealthy: we’re talking 1% of the 1% wealthy. What is one thing that the rich and the powerful want? They want to keep being rich and powerful for as long as they can. Look online and you’ll find plenty of articles about the super rich investing a lot of money into science that seeks to find ways to extend one’s life. I think Delos will not only be trying to extend his own life, but he will try to sell immortality to the super rich. We know the DNA, and encounters the guests have is all collected.

Now one might be asking “Well, what’s with all the secrecy involved with it?” If such a revalation that Delos has the ability create immortal beings, then the world would freak out, as such a thing has many ethical implications. Delos doesn’t want the wider world knowing of their plans. I think Delos will be subtle with how they sell their immortality to the super rich. When their future immortality customers are nearing the end of their lives, Delos will secretly approach them, and reveal that they have a way to extend their life. At this point, Delos can sell them immortality.

Now I think there is a major flaw with this immortality plan, and I think Logan sees this. So let’s say that Delos takes the guests’ DNA, learns about their most deep and personal innerworkings, does that mean that they can make their guests immortal? I don’t think so. I think they just end up creating a host who resembles and acts like these guests. It’s just a replication of the guests. It is not truly the consciousness of the guests (unless they have a way to tap the consciousness of the actual guests, but evidence for this hasn’t been revealed as of yet.). The evidence just seems to be that Delos will just be creating hosts that replicate guests as they are in the park, which is a bunch of pyschopathic maniacs that have no qualms about murder, rape, and other life. Add to that these people are the people that control society. Delos will effectively be making a bunch of guest replicants whose conerstone is based on how they were in the park, not how they are in the real world. I believe that there is no way these new guest replicants could possibly be introduced back out into the world without the results ending poorly for humanity. Delos will have replicated the most evil versions of the most powerful people on Earth, and release them back out into the world. This most definitely will be bad for Humanity. I think Logan sees this, which is why he is so against it. The way the guest act in the park is in the most inhumane and sociopathic manner. In many ways, the hosts are more human in respect to their actions while in Westworld.

I think Old William also recognizes what young Logan did, which is why he is on his journey to rectify his “biggest mistake”. Who know, I could be completely wrong with this theory. I just thought it was something that get the awesome crew at Shat on TV thnking.

Also, one fun little detail that I noticed. When young William stands up to James Delos and says that if “quote doens”t see the value in that, than you’re not the man I thought you were.” To which James responds by saying, “There’s not a man in the world who would talk to me like that. Not anymore, perhaps.”

Old William almost says the exact same thing to Lawrence in season one, when Lawrence says some smartass comment to William. Just something interesting I noticed.

Also, I attached an image that was pulled from one of the Westworld TV spots. In it you see Old Willaim in the foreground, with another figure in the background who is out focus. If you look closely, the person resembles James Delos, and appears to be wearing the blue shirt that James has been seem wearing. The location appears to be somewhere underneath the park as well. I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on it.

Anyway, keep up the good work guys.

This is the most compelling “Delos is selling immortality” argument I’ve heard so far. Really smart stuff.

And I do hope HBO examples the question, as the Delos Destinations website asks: “If a new body is created with your personality and memories, is it you?”
