American Gods 1-star reviews on iTunes

Hey, Roger, Gene, and Dick

This doesn’t pertain to any one of your shows or the normal weekly write-ins. This is about some of the 1-star reviews on iTunes.

I’ve read through them, and some of them are rating the actual show, rather than your guys’ podcast (I’ve actually flagged those for the iTunes staff to review, as that goes against the point of their system). Other reviews give you 1-stars purportedly because you have “incorrect” information in some of your episodes, e.g. one person says Odin is not a god of the gallows and you should brush up on your mythology. Well, I can happily say as someone who was previously majoring in Comparative Literature and Early English Literature, Odin is indeed associated with the Gallows: from the Hávamál poem of the Codex Regius, Carolyne Larrington’s 1999 translation: “I know that I hung on a windy tree nine long nights, wounded with a spear, dedicated to Odin, myself to myself, on that tree of which no man knows from where its roots run. No bread did they give me nor a drink from a horn, downwards I peered; I took up the runes, screaming I took them, then I fell back from there.”

I know this shouldn’t be a big deal to me, but knowing that you guys put in effort each week with these podcasts only to have people like this try to drag you down is upsetting. I can promise you, your information is pretty much always around the 96% accurate mark and, if not, you quickly realize and correct it (just like with the Isis vs. Bastet issue). I just wanted to let you guys know your podcasts are amazing, and both myself, my friends, and many other listeners appreciate everything you guys do.

I’m wishing you all the best,

Niko
