Hi guys,
I really enjoyed your podcast/coverage of Watchmen on HBO. I wanted to bring up a point from the finale and how it relates to Dr. Manhattan’s powers being transferred to Angela. During the finale, there were at least 2 references to the fact that Dr. Manhattan could have done more with his powers. I believe it was first mentioned by Senator Keene and then again later in the episode Will Reeves mentioned it to Angela in the kitchen right before she discovered the unbroken egg in the carton. I thought Angela would have had an angry reaction to hearing this from her grandfather but instead it seemed like she had given the statement some real thought. I think this is why Angela decided to eat the egg and why the egg did indeed contain Dr. Manhattan’s powers. I think the show made it clear that the consensus was that Dr. Manhattan could have done more with his powers. Will Reeves relayed Dr. Manhattan’s words “You can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs.” Dr. Manhattan represents broken eggs on the way to making the omelette (Angela). He had the powers but didn’t use them “perfectly.” I believe Dr. Manhattan saw in Angela someone who would use his powers for the best reasons possible and to positively change the world. She wanted to be a police officer from an early age and only wanted justice in the world, as did her grandfather (although the extremely racist time in which he was a police officer did not allow him to do the job effectively which is why he wore the mask). Please let me know what you think! I love the podcast.
